Starbuck's Coffee: The New Fundie Litmus Test???
Woman expresses indignation at quote on Starbucks cup

Dayton Daily News

By Margo Rutledge Kissell
Staff Writer
Sunday, May 06, 2007

SPRINGBORO — – Michelle Incanno was an admitted Starbucks addict.

She'd buy the company's coffee beans every week. Whenever she'd get the chance to drop by a Starbucks, she would, placing the same order every time: a large, house brewed coffee with nonfat milk and two Splenda. When the Seattle-based chain opened a drive-through near her Springboro home, she was in java heaven.

Michelle Incanno of Springboro displays the Starbucks cup that offended her. The cup bears a quote from Bill Scheel, a Starbucks customer, that says that God may be a figment of our imaginations. That was until she got an unexpected jolt last week from her coffee cup.

Printed on the cup was: "Why in moments of crisis do we ask God for strength and help? As cognitive beings, why would we ask something that may well be a figment of our imaginations for guidance? Why not search inside ourselves for the power to overcome? After all, we are strong enough to cause most of the catastrophes we need to endure."

It is attributed to Bill Schell, a Starbucks customer from London, Ontario, and was included on the cup as part of an effort by the company to collect different viewpoints and spur discussion.

"As someone who loves God, I was so offended by that. I don't think there needs to be religious dialog on it. I just want coffee," said Incanno, a married mother of three who is Catholic.

She wasn't satisfied with a company disclaimer saying the quote is the author's opinion, not necessarily that of Starbucks. It invites customers to respond at www.starbucks.com/wayiseeit. Starbucks spokeswoman Sanja Gould said the collection of thoughts and opinions is a "way to promote open, respectful conversation among a wide variety of individuals. "

But Incanno said her Starbucks days are over. "I wouldn't feel right going back," she said.

*** - So what she's saying is, "she loves god, but she doesn't want anyone to talk about him. There's no need for a dialog on it. She's just there for the caffeine jolts, thank you very much. "

Hmmm. But if you don't talk about your god, does he exist? Ahhh...

3. Fragile, insecure, afraid . . .
Why don't people like that just say "God can't survive questions or doubt. God can only be ______________".
No wonder Neitzsche said we have killed "God".

I'm offended by people who begin their responses to everything they don't understand with "I'm offended by ___________".

4. Anything that provokes thought is a bad idea for fundies
Their minds are incapable of managing intellectual type of discussions and if you cause them to think about their religion or sex, then they will try to bring wrath upon you.

6. Run! Opinion Different Than Yours!
...jeez what a weenie ~ she can't abide someone who actually thinks God is a figment of our imagination. In my church we have a member who is an athiest (her husband is not and she attends with him because she likes us and we love her). She keeps us on our toes, and I find her difference of beliefs a valued presence in our church because she asks what does not always occur to us and does not allow us to simply "preach to the choir." she cetrtainly has given me a lot of food for thought.

C'mon Church Lady, lighten up, open up that tiny little brain and let some light come in, sheesh.

8. Personally, I don't see
why they need to have any kind of quotes or comments on their cups.

What would all of the responders think of one that says something like; "Only through accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior can you be a worthy human being." Or, "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live." Or anything else that you simply don't agree with?

I do think Incanno is somewhat overreacting, but mainly because I'm inclined to agree with the quote. I'd be pretty annoyed at all kinds of other ones. But I'm in no danger here, since I don't buy overpriced coffee from anyone, not even Starbucks.

10. I dunno, I think they're fun
A little extra something to go with your snack, drink, whatever. When I was younger I used to be amused by the aphorisms printed all over Celestial Seasonings Tea and Screaming Yellow Zonkers. There have been religious quotes on Starbuck's coffee, like this one from Rick Warren:
"You are not an accident. Your parents may not have planned you, but God did. He wanted you alive and created you for a purpose. Focusing on yourself will never reveal your real purpose. You were made by God and for God, and until you understand that, life will never make sense. Only in God do we discover our origin, our identity, our meaning, our purpose, our significance and our destiny."
I don't see it as anything to get exercised about. I don't much like Starbuck's, but I don't think they're pursuing an agenda.

9. Who drinks Starbucks?
Their coffee is terrible, I prefer non-chain coffee shops or better yet making my espressos on my stove top with my Bialetti Espresso Machine.

11. Amen
1. Stop burning your damn roast so much just to add some flavor.
2. I want a real barista and not some damn machine that takes so much out of the bean that it gets bitter. The baristas at my local shop draw a mean shot and by buying there I am actually giving money to someone local.

14. I love coffee..I drink at least 7 to 8 cups a day.
And I can't stand Starbucks it takes like bitter root...That said. What is wrong with people who want everybody to agree with and believe things the way they do. That is one of the things wrong with republicans..They lack the basics to reason. They need to follow along like little sheep.

See here is another trait that the guy who did the survey of the republicans said. Not only are they psychotic, they tend to not be able to reason on their own, once they settle on a leader they will follow that person right on over a cliff.

21. I've seen that mentioned
Here's a quote they've used on their cups:

Darwinism's impact on traditional social values has not been as benign as its advocates would like us to believe. Despite the efforts of its modern defenders to distance themselves from its baleful social consequences, Darwinism's connection with eugenics, abortion and racism is a matter of historical record, and the record is not pretty.

That's from Jonathan Wells, ID advocate.

and would be saying it's totally appropriate to have religious stuff on the cups.

22. I hate to say it, but she has a small point
I'm not disagreeing with the quote at all. However, I'd hate it if they put a biblical quote on the cup, or a Jesus fish. The question becomes what is offensive, and what isn't, and any time a company decides to spur discussion someone will get offended.

However, I don't think people should be protected from being offended, and I certainly don't think she should be able to try and get Starbucks to drop that quote. If she doesn't like it, she's free to not go there again.
