Jerusalem Bomb Blast Targets Gay Pride Organizers

The detonation of a small-to-medium sized pipe bomb near an unpopulated construction site outside of Jerusalem on the morning of April 20 is widely suspected to be the work of anti-gay Ultra-Orthodox Jews opposed to the right of the city's LGBT community to hold its annual Pride March.

"This attack was a direct response to our request for a permit from the police for our June 21 march," Noa Sattah, executive director of the Jerusalem Open House, the city's LGBT community center, told Gay City News just hours after the attack. Sattah is in New York City visiting the Open House's U.S. partner, Congregation Beth Simchat Torah, the West Village LGBT synagogue.

The bomb, which caused slight injuries to a tractor operator near the construction site, had been placed in the general vicinity of Beit Jamal Monastery, established by the Roman Catholic Silesian order in 1919, but both the Open House and Jerusalem police believe that the detonation was intended to send a message to the LGBT community. Flyers denouncing the planned Pride Parade were found at the site of the bombing. "This had nothing to do with an anti-Christian message," Sattah said.

Last year, as the Open House was planning World Pride, an international gathering of LGBT activists, two similar explosive devices were found, also with anti-gay flyers right next to them. Those devices were not set to detonate. "Those were intended to send a threatening message," Sattah said.

*** - Ya know, it's unusual to see a group of people who'll remain absolutely steadfast in their Bronze Age beliefs these days. Of course 6,000 year-old beliefs can be a little unweldy sometimes. Coming into conflict with, well you know -- things like SANITY!!!

And I know that I wouldn't want to be a goat, or a lamb, or a dove around these folks. Can you spell S-A-C-R-I-F-I-C-E? They still do that too, don't they???? I know I never saw anything about the ASPCA in the Torah.

Nor would I want to be an adulteress, or a worshipper of Moloc. Anyone of these could get you stoned. Or now, apparently, bombed....

1. Fanatics of ANY ilk are to be condemned!!!

Itzak Rabin was not killed by some Islamic fanatic, but by an Orthodox Jew, Yigal Amir, a right-wing activist who had strenuously opposed Rabin's signing of the Oslo Accords.

Nothing good comes from fanaticism.

2. "Nothing good comes from fanaticism"...???
Amir killed Rabin to derail the peace process and perpetuate Israel's hold on "Judea and Samaria." So far, it looks like "Mission Accomplished." :-(

3. The Assassination of ArchDuke Ferdinand led to WWI...which was exactly what the goal was.
Ferdinand would have been a moderate leader, and the revolutionaries did not want the anger of the populace to dissipate..
Ends justifying the means does not equal "good" results, particularly when both the means and the ends are inherently bad/evil.

4. The beliefs of these ultra-orthodox sects
are not 6000 years old, it's only a few hundred years old. It is based on their Torah interpretation (I don't think the Torah is even 3000 years old) but these small sects are not very old at all.

Their primitive need for animal sacrifice is silly but it doesn't really scare me (since the animal is consumed anyway), however their hatefulness is troubling and a cause of concern. They are fucking crazy and they do want to live in the bronze age, like you said. However they like to live in their 16th-century-Poland attire (black suit and black hats) which was the fashion when these sects came to existence.

...yes god is good, great and loving. :sarcasm:

Unless you cross him for some reason. Like eating lobster or wearing polyester and wool together. Then he gets others to do his dirty work on you. Well, I suppose I can understand him being pissed about polyester.

But all this begs the question:

"Why is god p.o.'d at us? Isn't he the one that created this mess in the first place?!?!?!"

on edit: BTW Christa, I love the atheisttoolbox website. I lurk there frequently! ;)

One of the questions believers can never answer: how a "loving god" can allow cruelties.

11. I think I'm gonna...
... join. Usually I like to lurk at a site first to make sure I'm a good fit. I lurked at DU for several weeks before I was inexorably drawn in -- like a planet fitting into its correct orbit. :)
