Hardbeatnews, MIAMI, Florida, Fri. Apr. 6, 2007: The Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church has made a personal appeal to President George W. Bush on behalf of the 101 Haitian migrants who entered the U.S. illegally last week.
Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori lent her voice to many Florida activists, who have been making the same appeal over the past week. In a letter to the President, yesterday, the church leader said returning the migrants “would be a cruel and unjust act.”
“These vulnerable persons need support as they attempt to present their claims for remaining in the United States,” added the Bishop. “They also need speedy access to our asylum system and assurances that they will not be returned to the violence from which they have fled.”
Bishop Schori added that the migrants “trauma should not be compounded by isolation and neglect.” ....
