Your choice of Operation: Atheist or Fundie.

The question here is simple. You are strapped down in a chair, and there are some evil scientists standing before you. They are going to operate on your brain, and you get the choice of which operation (of 2) you will get:

Operation 1: You will get a piece cut out of you that makes you stop believing in god. The rest of your your thoughts will be the same, except that you can no longer believe in god, and you can't even PRETEND you believe, so if anybody asks you, you have to admit your atheist. You, of course, don't have to argue atheism or rail against theism....but you will never EVER get your faith back.

Operation 2: You will get a piece cut out of your brain that makes you MORE religious. You will start believing in the bible an unerring truth. When science contradits something, you will not believe in the science. In fact, you will start hating science because it contradicts the bible. You, of course, don't have to evangelize or bash anybody (although these things are said in the bible and that compels you to some degree).

As well, whatever operation you take, you are aware of what happened to you. If you hate atheists or fundies (or both), you will still hate yourself after...but you can't help yourself.

Which one would you pick?

Oh yeah, and one more thing. You have ten minutes to choose...and after every that, every five minutes, one of your relatives or friends (being held in another country), will be raped, tortured, and killed. This will also happen if you escape (I just added this to prevent slippery answers!).

I know this is a stupid question, and a ridiculous scenario. I'm just interested in the answers.

Only atheists: to let the atheists respond, lets add another choice...a third operation that makes you believe in hell, but you can't help blaspheming (i.e. you become afraid of hell, but can't accept god).

Both 2 & 3 would make me a fundie.

If the already religious get to choose between no religion or fundiedom, I should be able to choose between fundiedom and whatever its religious opposite would be (tho maybe, since I couldn't put a name to it it doesn't really exist).

That said, I'd have to go with #2 - because the whole reason I have no religion is because I refuse to live in fear, making #3 no option for me.

12. Hah! Simple simple simple choice for me. Operation 3, without a doubt.

Because, logically, there are just two possibilities.

1) There is a hell, and no heaven (or similar paradise). In that case, I would be damned whatever happened, so I can still do as I wish. That is, try and improve the world as much as I can.

I'd still probably be religious in much the same way that I am now, because it's not really about "faith." Depending on the specifics of the "operation," it might not even change my view at all. :shrug:
