3. His name is Jeshua
son of Joseph. Christ means "Messiah", I believe, in Greek.

11. It's actually Yeshua in Aramaic.
It's related to the Hebrew Yehoshua ("YHWH is salvation"), which is translated as Joshua, in English. Yeshua in Greek is Iesous, which become Iesus, or Jesus, in Latin. Christ means "The anointed" in Greek.

6. Well, people already worship Elvis.
Why, I don't know. It may have something to do with the gospel records he put out.

"Jesus Christ!" is the all American expletive, unless you're Catholic and it's "Jesus, Mary and Joseph!" Some people consider it swearing, but I see it as a low form of prayer ("Hey, god! Would you look at this!

"Christ" is a title, not a surname. The etymology is from the Greek. It's nothing a Circassian Aramaic speaker would have come up with. If he had a surname, his name would have been Yeshua bar Maryam.

My guess is that it's called Christmas because it's easier to say.

8. Christ is a translation for the word messiah
Christ is a title and derived from the Greek word christos, meaning the "Anointed One" (the messiah). The word christos is a translation of the Hebrew word Messiach to Greek.

The name "Jesus" is an anglicization of the Greek Iesous which is derived from the Hebrew Yehoshua or Aramaic Yeshua.

13. More errors in meaning stories...
Christ is a title and derived from the Greek word christos, meaning the "Anointed One" (the messiah). The word christos is a translation of the Hebrew word Messiach to Greek.

Ah, but the important part of the word Meshiach (in those days - which is lost on modern Jews too) is (which is not conveyed in the word Christ) is that it used to mean, at that time, a FULLFILLER OF A PROPHESY.

That's why it was a time of false prophets, because everyone was prophesying the end of the world and the fulfillment of Old Testament prophets and other extant prophesies.

The prophesy Yeshua (if he existed, etc) may have been fullfilling would have been the one that talks about someone from the line of David marrying someone from the line of Sarah and bringing about a revolution to overthrow the Kingdom of Israel from its oppressors. Good times for all thereafter.

Of course if God was the father that f*cks up that prophesy so the clever leaders of early Christos Iesous went back to the Old Testament and found another prophesy to pretend had been fullfilled (except it already had been, but who cares - no one's going to spot that f*ck-up for 1000's of years!).

For the record the leader of the SanHedrin was annointed by the head priest (line from Moses's decent), from a formula only known to the priests. The idea that Jesus was annointed was a bit rich, since ONLY the leader of the Sanhedrin would have been so exalted. To even talk of such would have offended a nation. Its the equivalent of Joan Rivers swearing allegiance. Well, sort of.

16. Interesting--I have a question.
I had a double major in English and religion but have forgotten quite a bit. But I'm sure I never heard of this:

"The prophesy Yeshua (if he existed, etc) may have been fullfilling would have been the one that talks about someone from the line of David marrying someone from the line of Sarah and bringing about a revolution to overthrow the Kingdom of Israel from its oppressors. Good times for all thereafter.

If you don't mind, would you explain or maybe be so kind as to provide a link where I can learn about this? None of my Christian teachers (back when I was a Christian student) EVER mentioned anything like this, of that I'm sure. ***NOTE: I'm familiar with the "line of David" prophecy but not the "line of Sarah" part, or the "another prophecy" to fix the "God the father" problem.***

18. All (non-converted Jews) are of the line of Sarah...
so it would simply refer to the mother of the messiah being a Jewess.

I've had a google and a wiki and I also fail to find a reference so either its in one of my books (which I'm literally surrounded by) or, and I have to accept the possibility - I may have been mistaken. It doesn't sound like the kind of thing I would make up, and it does, to my ear, sound like something I've read somewhere, but without a reference for you I have to step back from that discussion for a while, until I can come back to you, preferably with some proof.

As for the other part of the discussion. The "line" of a Jew is with the male, so if the messiah has no father he is an Israelite, not a Priest or a Levi or from the line of David. There is some clever argument about how a mothers line can be taken under miraculous circumstances, but if the father was Joseph it would make the process of a family tree that much easier. However, Christians deny Joseph is the father to Jesus (only to James and the other brothers and sisters) so the son can't have a family line and is demoted to Israelitish descent, like converts and adopted children.

The prophesy of Isiah has been discussed here previously (and well) by Mr Wiggles, who has stated that the prophesy related to an event of that time and was subsequently fulfilled at the time.

Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

This was mistranslated from its original meaning of "young girl" rather than virgin, but was re-hashed when it was required for the coming of Christ Jesus. Along with various donkey riding, star tailing, wise-men approaching zoroastrian stories.

And slightly at a tangent now:

In the Similitudes of Enoch (chapters 37 to 71 of 1 Enoch, probably written in the mid first century by a Jewish sect) the figure called the Elect One or Righteous One—also Son of Man and Messiah—is revealed to be waiting in heaven. Soon he shall appear on earth to render judgment, he will raise the oppressed and overthrow the wicked rulers and those who reject the Most High (God). He is the champion of a group on earth, the suffering righteous and elect. In the Elect One dwells those qualities, holiness and righteousness, shared by his earthly counterparts. They await the changes he will bring, including their own glorification and reception of eternal life. This Righteous One (a ‘spiritual Messiah’ idea among Jews!) is not a sacrificial figure, however; the Enochian sect had not evolved in this direction.

Taken from http://home.ca.inter.net/~oblio/supp08.htm
part of an enormous tome of work debunking Christs divinity and origins.

I have a vague idea the Davidic/Saraic quote may be in a book called "The Jesus Papers" by Baigent. I must have a quick delve in there and see if I can find it.

If not, I will not mention it again, and thank you for the correction.

TRYPHO

Not fashionable in his days. Long hair, a long beard, a long robe, and birkenstocks were the fashion of the time.
