Unemployed and selling my possessions on this page
These are the books and DVDs I'm selling through half.com. There'll be more of these added as things continue to deteriorate.

2. Do you have unemployment?
If not, do you have skills a temp agency could use, to keep the wolf from the door?

7. Not eligible
I'm coming off a year of grad school (living off student loans, which I don't recommend anyone trying) and I haven't had a real job since last August. I'm about to graduate so the student loan source is drying up.

I may have a line on a pizza delivery gig, though.

8. See if you can find work at a temp agency
Might not be the best bet, but it will tide you. Also, those temp jobs sometimes develop into full time slots...if there is an opening, and you like the company, you can apply.

11. They tell me not to bother filling in the application form here
I tell them my skills are in clerical work and usually the conversation ends pretty quickly thereafter. Probably because I'm male.

12. That seems odd. You'd think they'd want a bit of diversity.
Edited on Tue Apr-26-05 11:41 PM by MADem
You might just want to push, insist that you want to try for the job, and fill out the form anyway. What the hell, it is practice for you, getting in the groove of going through the drill.

And hey, ask them if they discriminate on the basis of gender for clerical jobs. They just might hire you out of litigious nervousness.
Edit, sloppy typing

14. You're probably right
These were phone conversations with temp agencies who had placed ads saying they were hiring, too. Very strange.

16. Well, if you are on the phone again, get a NAME
...before you even launch into any detail. "Hi, my name is Barney Rubble, and your name? Gilda? Gilda what? Radner? Good morning, Ms. Radner, I am calling about...."

Have pen and paper handy. If you are in a one party recording state, and you have a recording answerphone, push the button, too!

It is easy to be discouraged. Just work hard on not showing it. Easier said than done, I know.

21. Exactly what type of clerical skills do you possess?
Have you ever thought of trying to become a Legal Secretary or Assistant? I know a former reporter who got a job at a law firm in DC. Attorneys are really difficult to work for, and the nature of the work is pretty stressful usually. The HR people were so thrilled to have a male secretary who was not intimidated by the attorneys they asked him did he know where they could get more ....

5. Can you take in a roomie to make ends meet?
I have often wondered what I will do when the unemployment runs out.
Sorry, but I don't have money to spend on anything but food and utilities.

9. If you do that, do a contract
That verbal nonsense does not fly, even with a friend or acquaintance--you never know someone until ya live with them. Specify rent, share of utilities, chores, noise, guests, the whole nine yards.

I am no contract expert, but I'm sure you can find some tips on these here internets.

13. I'm afraid this isn't possible
Three cats and one litter box per cat don't make this an attractive situation for prospective roommates.

18. I am making changes to allow for this inevitability, you should too
When it is a matter of survival, you make the changes.
Since it is your home, you are able to make the stipulations.

I am only trying to help you survive.
Think on it.

Sorry for the jest...

I wish you well, and I'll check your page out to see if there is anything I might buy.

Take heart, what you are doing will bring back a thousand-fold what you're going through now. And I know that is hard to believe, but it will get better.

Peace.

15. Here's a kick for you....
...Yep, took me 10 years to pay off my student loan from grad school. Well, if there's any consolation, at least you're graduating. I was asked not to return to my finish up my degree, because I disagreed with the Department Chair, for his philosophy of how the department should be ran. Yep, I was young in those days, and didn't know how to keep my mouth shut...
