He hasn't exactly supported his successor. But I lay far more blame on NBC. I only rest well knowing that the bad publicity will lose them much more money in the long run than ratings of any late night TV show could've.

At any rate fuck them both:

6. Conan is a real talent
Leno sucks.

His jokes are lame.

The guy just is not funny at all. I've never ONCE laughed at one of his jokes.

RIP Masturbating bear, Pimp Bot 5000, Chegg and Insult comic dog. All from the brilliant mind of Conan Obrien. The world is a sadder place without him.

8. Dear Mr Conan
Leno beat Letterman in the ratings every year from 1995 to 2009. You couldn't beat Letterman. So you're out and Jay's back. Sorry, nothing personal, just business.

9. Except for the fact that Jay Leno didn't have a ratings loser for a lead-in, you'd have a point.
Jay Leno had strong shows on before the news. All the local affiliates complained when Leno's show went on before them because their ratings tanked. Well if people turned off Jay and the local news, Conan never really had a chance did he? Is that Conan's fault or perhaps Jay Leno's?

11. Lots of people used to tolerate Leno just to get to Conan
Those people are now going to Letterman.

Leno is a dick. He's always had an issue with Letterman and now he screwed Conan. NBC may be a bucn of dicks as well but Leno did agree to step down.

16. Leno never beat Letterman by more than half a rating point.
Not a big lead when you really look at the numbers. Plus Letterman always had better demographics, a more educated and affluent audience.

Conan did have a drop off in total viewers, which was expected, but by the end of 3rd Qtr. he was beating Letterman in the 18-34 demo, tied in the 18-49 demo and only trailing slightly in the 25-54 demo. Not bad considering all the press Letterman got over the summer from his dust-up with Sarah Palin and blackmail scandal.

It was when Leno's show started in the fall that Conan lost more viewers but he still tied Letterman in the 18-34 and 18-49 demos. It's estimated Leno's show caused a 30% for Local News on NBC affiliates on average. That definately impacted Conan's show.

And remember the affiliates never demanded that Conan be canceled, they demanded that Leno's 10PM show be canceled.

34. Thanks for that informed response. Leno used to be funny, like a million years ago. Since he's got
the Tonight Show he's become mainstream, middle-of-the-road milquetoast. And whatever went down between him and Letterman, neither ever got over it and if I had to choose sides, I'd be on Letterman's. Also, I love Conan! I think he's a comic genius (despite the fact that some of the bits on his show creeped me out.)

Not really necessary. Karma is already on the case.
And exhibit A is Mr Conan O'Brien. What a class act tonight's finale was. Wherever he turns up, he is going to be bigger than ever.

Don't blame Jay who? I prefer to think the current NBC management wanted to give the subsequent Comcast owners a stink bomb on their way out.

And a year or two from now, I wouldn't put it past Karma finding the new Comcast owners in a bidding war to bring Conan back to the Tonight Show.

Tonight was a sweet finish to a very ugly week.

13. Why are people barely breaking even in life worrying so much about multi-millionaires?
Conan O'Brien will move on with his $45 million severance package and go to another station. Just turn to that channel and you won't have to hear Jay's bad jokes. Why waste so much time acting personally offended by something that will barely affect your TV viewing pleasure, let alone your actual life?

25. Too bloody right.
I saw that people were actually protesting outside NBC one day. We can't get people to do that to stop war, torture, phone taps, etc etc but Americans draw the LINE at this outrageous miscarriage of justice. Shite. Anyway, if these people had all been so behind Conan, he wouldn't have had such crap ratings.

33. Conan O'Brien Takes Care of His Own
According to the Associated Press, Conan O'Brien has reached a $45 million settlement for his exit from The Tonight Show. NBC was trying to grant separate severance deals to members of Conan's staff, but he had another idea. Instead, Conan decided to keep close to $33 million and distribute the remaining money to his staff - out of his own pocket. O'Brien has put the word out: he takes care of his own.

snip...

As famous Chinese General Sun Tzu (The Art of War) counseled his generals to treat their rank and file soldiers "as their own beloved sons," so too has O'Brien. Regardless of where Conan ends up, his act of decency and generosity towards his hard-working staff is sure to be long remembered. NBC could learn a thing or two about how to be a class act from the guy they kicked to the curb.

Then NBC took the Tonite Show away from Conan. How does Leno get the blame?

21. the fault here is all on NBC . . .
they never should have forced Leno out in favor of Conan, since Leno's Tonight Show audience is not Conan's audience, and never will be . . . then they force fit Leno into the 10:00 slot five days a week -- a place where his audience isn't, either . . . so Conan bombs at 11:30 trying to play to Leno's audience, and Leno bombs at 10:00 trying to play to the prime time drama-loving audience . . . not surprising in the least . . .

so to correct their massive error (one of the worst in television history, it seems), they try to shuffle Leno back to 11:30 and move Conan to 12:05 -- when the Tonight Show is no longer on tonight . . . Conan refuses, and decides to walk, leaving Leno at NBC and a vacancy on the Tonight Show . . . guess what happens next . . .

personally, I stopped watching late night years ago, and don't particularly like Leno, Conan, or Letterman . . . but I also don't really blame either Leno or Conan for this debacle . . . it's all on NBC, and it's costing them a fortune to fix it, both in money and in prestige (they're looking like the fools they are) . . . Leno gets the Tonight Show back, Conan is free to sign with another net (or retire with his $45 million), and Letterman is laughing all the way to the bank as his competition devours itself . . . should all make for a nice followup to the original "Late Night Wars" film, don'tcha think? . . .

now, on to something important . . . have you donated to Haitian relief yet? . . . if you have an American Express card, you can donate your bonus points, and they'll contribute $10 for every 1,000 points you give . . . you can also call the Hope for Haiti Now telethon, or check out their website . . .

https://www.hopeforhaitinow.org/Default.asp . . .

please give what you can . . .
