THE WATCHMAN ?
Edited on Fri Feb-06-09 08:43 PM by AsahinaKimi

Is anyone excited about seeing this film? I just saw the trailer for the first time on YOUTUBE
after seeing a poster on the subway wall. This must be based on a comic book, but I don't
recall seeing this before.. Anyone got any insight to this?

1. The Watchmen is a deconstruction of standard comic books.
It's a wonderful graphic novel and made Time's top 100 novels for it's intricate and multilayered storytelling.

2. The graphic novel came out when I was a teen.
Find it, I think you will love it.

I am very excited by the movie. I hope it will be good. I love the trailer.

3. I keep trying to read it, cannot seem to be able to!
I have tried so many times to get into it, have had it for years and yet never yet read it, other than flip through the pages and randomly read a couple pages here and there.

What gives? Is there some secret to "getting into it"?

Maybe the print is too small and so too hard to read. That could be.

Maybe after I see the film?

5. It's not an easy read, and the non-linear story telling model makes it tougher.
In the end, it becomes so much more coherent.

6. ...and the print is really small, right?
I have to say that the font size/style, for me, in graphic novels will make or break it. I wish more artists/writers really grasped that. No matter how fantastic the writing and story are, if I cannot read it, I cannot read it.

waaaaah! I want to read it!

7. It's the 9 panel per page layout.
It makes it a lot harder to read, but puts less focus on the art than the copy.

10. I'm reading in the Lounge and elsewhere on the net that
they've changed the ending.

WHUMPF. That's the sound of my jaw dropping like a million tonnes of bricks.

I cannot believe it. So close, yet so far...

13. Keep in mind this is a movie
so certain things that work in the comic context don't fly so well with a film. Apparently he did that so he could keep more of the characters' backstories in the film - which is fine by me.

"But he also angered fans when he revealed that he had changed the ending of “Watchmen.” Though the film does adhere to the essence of the story’s last chapter, in which its heroes ignore the murderous acts of their nemesis for the good of humanity, Mr. Snyder altered crucial details.

To preserve the original ending of “Watchmen,” “you’d be talking about taking 30 minutes of other stuff out of the movie,” he said. “And right now I’m on the edge with just how much Rorschach I have, and how much Nite Owl, and how much Dr. Manhattan.”

Throughout the making of “Watchmen” Mr. Snyder has gone to unusual lengths to signal that he reveres the graphic novel as much as the fans do. He commissioned Mr. Gibbons and the comic’s original colorist, John Higgins, to create a poster for the movie, as well as the storyboards for his film’s amended ending. And he has appropriated much of the visuals and dialogue straight from the comics, down to Rorschach’s mumbled catchphrase, “hurm.”"

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/01/movies/01itzk.html?_r=2&em=&pagewanted=all

Snyder has also stated he's inserted loads of "easter eggs" for fans of the comic in the film, and there's plans for an extended cut of the film for DVD that will intersperse sections of the animated "Tales of the Black Freighter" into the film, in correspondence to where they occur in the comic book.

17. My wife took the opposite course into Watchmen nerdgasm
We saw the trailer at The Dark Knight, she thought it looked amazing, and she wouldn't stop bugging me with questions about the characters and story from bits she read on wikipedia. I f inally told her to just read the book and that was that.

18. Well, to be fair....
...the original ending doesn't make as much sense now that we're no longer in the middle of a Cold War. As long as the new ending more or less preserves the underlying themes, I can live with it.
