4. I cannot wait to see...
What the reason is. This will be a very interesting control in the larger experiment. No way can they deploy the infrastructure to manipulate this, if indeed, such infrastructure existed. If it did, all involved have gone to ground.

5. I believe it will be local only
If I remember the story, there was some glitch that affected a local election. There won't be a presidential vote.

8. Federal law and the Constitution govern presidential elections.
Edited on Tue Nov-30-04 06:42 PM by Garbo 2004
Which is why the states are limited in what they can do in regard to the Pres election.

NC previously said it didn't have jurisdictional authority regarding the Presidential vote. Hence the revote is for NC state candidates, issues.

10. but from what i gather, there is nothing in the US constitution
Edited on Tue Nov-30-04 06:45 PM by Faye
that determines if a Presidential revote is legal, possible, etc.

and there should be.

16. That's because the power of election is really with the electoral college
as certified by the Congress. The Constitution's framers did not want the masses to directly decide the Presidency. The US is not a "popular democracy" in any sense. ;) So if there are issues or disputes within states either they are decided by the state judiciary prior to the seating of the electors and as the last "remedy" Congress decides. The system was set up to avoid the unwashed masses from really deciding things so given that view, no reason to have a revote. Our "betters" will decide for us.

That's why for many the Supreme's decision in 2000 was such a controversial act beyond just the outcome, the Supremes intervened in a process that arguably should have been decided by the State court, the electors and Congress.

20. Whoa!
In a decision that likely will bring more court appeals, the board voted 4-1 Tuesday to let 4,438 Carteret County voters whose ballots weren't counted due to a computer mistake try again to vote in a special election Jan. 11.

But what's more, Carteret residents who were registered to vote Nov. 2, but didn't, also will be eligible to vote during that election.

Those votes will be added to the ballots that have been counted properly in Carteret, and the county's new total will be added to the other 99 counties to determine the next commissioner.

I actually do not like this. If all 4,438 voters can be assembled and their complete ballots recast that is one thing. But adding the non-voters to the mix doesn't seem right. What if some of the 4,438 cannot be found or are not able to vote due to death, illness, travel, etc? I don't know what the fairest solution would be and I'm thankful I'm not in the position of having to decide, but it seems as everyone is damned if they do and damned if they don't. That is why it is so vital we get this right the first time. Agh!

12. Maybe enough "irregularity" will be shown to cast a long shadow of doubt
Is it just me, or did everybody seem okay with election results until bush showed up on the national scene?
