Political blind spots kept Democrats and often the media from realizing how effective President Bush's re-election campaign had become over the past year, culminating in shock in some quarters at John Kerry's loss, a chief strategist for the Bush-Cheney campaign said Tuesday.
Matthew Dowd, a former pollster and co-founder of Austin-based Public Strategies Inc., addressed a luncheon sponsored by the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and spoke about the lessons he and others learned over the past four years.
There were several "urban political legends" that developed late in the campaign, promulgated in large part by the mainstream media, he said.
There was the notion, for example, that the Democratic Party had a better grass-roots organization in place than Republicans, thanks in part to groups such as labor unions.
