NC Democratic Governor Beverly Perdue Wants to Suspend the 2012 Elections!
A year ago, I made the bold suggestion that we should suspend the 2012 elections. I had stated that we needed our Congress to work until they could get all the necessary progressive legislation was in place, as well as to have a longer period of trying to fill the necessary federal judge slots with young progressive legal minds.

ORIGINAL POST

Unfortunately, many of you lambasted my idea. But let's be honest: We all think it, and now, Beverly Perdue, Governor of North Carolina, wants to suspend the naxt election!

Now, to be fair, she said she was joking, but the bottom line is that we MUST prevent the republicans from taking over. It takes balls to advocate an act that we CAN CONSTITUTIONALLY ENACT if we had the courage to understand the REAL enemy of our country, and the world, is the American republican Party. Pure and simple.

1. Seems to me if we could have presidential election in the middle of a Civil War
. . .we can have one now. Besides, what a precedent. Where in the world do you get the idea that progressives have the power to stop an election, even if we wanted to? If anybody could do that, it would be the Kochs and their minions.

I'm sure they'll take your suggestion under advisement.

8. You do understand, don't you, that during the Civil War the vast
majority of Lincoln's opponants did not vote in that election? To make that equivalancy, you'd have to have a third of the nation in armed revolt, voting with bullets.

You might want to think that one through before you try that bogus argument again.

12. You mean those who seceded didn't vote? Well, duh.
I hardly think Jeff Davis was likely to win a national election. The point is, the election took place. During a Civil War. Take your "bogus argument" back to some romanticized version of the slave-holding South.

13. Point being, we have never suspended elections ever
Nor should we ever, as long as we want to have a country and not a failed state.

And many of lincolns opponents didnt vote because, oh, I dont know, because they were trying to kill him. Not because they were not allowed to.

But bad idea. Bad bad bad bad bad terrible idea. Its such a bad idea I think I would be insulting peoples intelligence to give the reasons why.

16. Again, bullshit. There were no national elections in 1964. A third of the
nation was in revolt, and those southern states that were occupied were not included in the vote. So when you say "we have never suspended elections ever" you are factually incorrect.

That is not to say that anyone should take Gov Purdue's comment seriously - but it IS a fucking lie, nonetheless.

17. Your state voluntarily chose to be a part of a different country
Therefore it doesn't get to vote in another countries elections. The u.s.a has always had elections. Did your southern education teach you differently?

2. We do not postpone elections.
Even the most short sighted should be able to figure out why.

3. How on earth could we "constitutionally enact" such an act?
Oh I know! Wait for the next debt limit debate and get the thing to run out just before the election... then cancel it because the government is shut down.

Pretty ridiculous really. The Gov will be lucky if we don't kick her out in a primary... let alone survive the election. I'm sure she secretly wishes we could just dispense with this inconvenient "will of the people" stuff. But that isn't how it works.

9. You'd like that, wouldn't you, to shut up a Democrat who actually
stands up to Republicans.

IT WAS A FUCKING JOKE.

10. It has nothing at all to do with my preferences. She's legitimately in trouble.

As I said on the other thread. There's hardly ever been a politician who didn't think that he could do the job better if he just never had to face the electorate.

IT WAS A FUCKING JOKE.

That's certainly the spin afterwards. But there was no indication that it was a joke at the time... and it doesn't read like a joke (or "hyperbole").

Punishing the left for not destroying the government. Some jokes are not funny, and shouldnt be said. Some, like in this case, shouldnt have even been thought. Her saying something like this makes me wonder how the hell she made it that far, unless today was just a bad day for her brain waves.

5. My POINT was to bring out our position and to solidify the GOP ban requirement
I had actually looked into postponing the elections last year. While lambasted at the time, once the baggers took over the House, I got dozens of mia culpas. Though too little too late, it has intensified the need to look into legal ways to negate the influence of the republican party, which IS the Tea Party now. Barring the media's attempt to ensure we have another McCain run for the goonies, we MUST ensure that the baggers keep their place.

And lets face it: the GOP is NOT a political party by any stretch of the imagination with their current policies and makeup. We need to destroy it as soon as possible, and if we have have governors with balls start thinking out the box (I LIVE outside the box myself), then that's who we gotta defend.

Losing an election is evidence that you should have called it off or postponed it?

BzaDem had it right on that original thread. You're posting on DemocraticUnderground... yet present an entirely undemocratic notion.

18. As funny as Bush when....
Her suggestion sounds about as funny as GW Bush when he said something like, "This would be easier if it was a dictatorship; as long as I'm the dictator," or when he started joking about the WMDs that he never found and looked in ridiculous pales like behind the curtains. Thousands of people died because of that war based on false pretenses and it costs billions of dollars which is contributing to the collapse of our economy now.

Beverly Perdue may not be from the same party but she is clearly giving the Republicans plenty of ammunition to use to avoid issues and demonize her. Instead of satirizing the problem we need to spend more time discussing ways to reform the system and implement election reform that enables the public to participate in the interview process and discuss important issues; not provide another excuse to distract from the issues. As far as I can see this doesn't include any discussion on that.

19. Just ban the republican party, and we wouldn't even be HAVING this discussion.
Of course, if we ban the republican party, then we would ACTUALLY be living in a REAL democracy with a diverse selection of spirited, competent political discourse, and NOT this war we have in trying to get rid of a despotic organization that has bastardized the original intent of said political discours and using it to advance their demonic views to destroy humanity and our planet. Pure and simple.

20. Sounds tempting but
Then they really would have a complaint about suppressing their rights and they could and would and have used this as an excuse to attempt to supress the right of those that disagree with them. It seems more effective to argue with them on the merits since if this is allowed their case will fall apart eventually. It may be tedious but if records are kept it will work more effectively and we can say we did it the right way without worrying about them saying if you can do it so can we.
