The Problem With Electronic Voting Machines

It's clear to me by reading the posts in this forum that you guys are already up on this subject. However, the PBS program 'Need To Know' put together a great segment which you might find useful to pass on to... whomever. On Tuesday, one in six voters will be casting their ballots using touch screen technology. Largely in reaction to the Bush-Gore Florida debacle, Congress passed the Help America Vote Act. It was designed in part to mandate new, up-to-date voting machines that would be safe and reliable.

But here’s what you need to know: Ten years and billions of tax dollars later, the way America votes is still something of a mess. It’s vulnerable to human error, hardware and software crashes – and, yes, bad-guy hackers. We asked Need to Know correspondent Rick Karr to investigate.

1. Just like our virus protection programs have to constantly

be updated, and most times after a new virus is released, what do you all think would have to happen to those electronic voting machines. And just think. Each little old district would have to be constantly updated and checked. The task would be unsurmountable. It could not be done. There has to be a way to make them fail safe.

someone said that the ATM machines run by the banks, can't be hacked why can't they make the voting machines safe. the only ATM machines which are programmed to be crooked are the private ones. Some time ago a company in India said that they could produce voting machines similar to ATM for under 200 or 300 dollars each and that these machines would produce a paper trail and could not be hacked. You never heard anything else about them. BECAUSE THEY WOULD WORK.

4. the ATM machines are hard to hack because they are not normally on the Internet.

They use dedicated lines. Also it is in the owners benefit for ATM machines to be honest.
Not so with electronic voting machines manufactured and owned by conservative Republican supporting companies.
Both types most likely use Windows operating systems, usually XP.
I've never had a problem with ATM's because I don't use them. I prefer the pretty tellers in side the banks... and they can answer any questions I may have.

2. I hate those rotten, election-stealing machines.

I want to be there to shovel dirt on them when they are finally turned into landfill.
