Guilt by Association, Two women are sacrificed for the election board's incompetence

Guilt by Association
Two women are sacrificed for the election board's incompetence.
By Denise Grollmus
Article Published Jan 31, 2007

As Judge Peter Corrigan reads the verdict, TV cameras zoom in on the three defendants.

Jacquie Maiden, a poised preacher's wife, huddles between her attorneys. Next to her is Kathy Dreamer, a subdued Irish woman seemingly unaccustomed to her charcoal suit. Hiding in the corner is Rosie Grier, a soft-spoken lady who's spent most of her life changing bedpans for seniors.

They look more like a sewing circle than a gang of convicts. But the three Cuyahoga County Board of Elections employees face seven charges each, accused of rigging the 2004 presidential election recount.

In moments, Corrigan will christen Maiden and Dreamer felons. A jury has found them guilty of negligent misconduct and failure to perform their duties.

1. Scapegoats taking the fall for their employers, the real criminals?
Will anything really change as long as those who are truly guilty are not justly charged?

Thought I would pose the question.

4. "irregularities were caused by intentional misconduct and illegal behavior"
This case is not what was meant in these excerpts from the Conyers Report:

"... we find that there were massive and unprecedented voter irregularities and anomalies in Ohio. In many cases these irregularities were caused by intentional misconduct and illegal behavior...."

"... it is imperative that we examine any and all factors that may have led to
voting irregularities and any failure of votes to be properly counted."

This stuff is prologue. That examination was not possible under Republican control in the US Congress or in Ohio. All that has now changed, and, surprise, surprise, the spin is getting dizzying again. Simple facts remain to be contended with, such as:

OHIO 2004: 6.15% Kerry-Bush vote-switch found in probability study.

Jury debates whether workers mishandled presidential vote recount
M.R. KROPKO Associated Press http://www.ohio.com/mld/beaconjournal/news/state/16527136.htm

"CLEVELAND - A jury on Tuesday started to decide whether three election workers in the state's most populous county illegally rigged what was supposed to be a random sample recount in the 2004 presidential election to avoid a time-consuming hand count of all votes.

" "This was not done for political reasons," the case's special prosecutor, Kevin Baxter, said in his closing argument. "It was so you didn't have to do a full hand recount. Politics didn't matter." ...."
