It's astonishingly easy to hack these things and apparently one doesn't even need to know the source code to write a malicious program.

All it takes is a pick set and a memory card and the ability to write some pretty basic code.

who wrote the software and was "disappeared" in a Georgia motel room, I believe? He was heading out to testify or tell someone how the software worked, if memory serves me correctly.

3. I vaguely recall a video from Black Box Voting

a few years ago that showed Bev Harris demonstrating to Howard Dean how easy it was to change votes
from a remote laptop without any memory card or other physical tampering.
There are most likely numerous ways to hack into Diebold.
This is all very scary.
