MI - 'The voter reg. you currently hold...may be cancelled'
Surprise:

The Secretary of State of Michigan is purging legitimate voters
off of the registration lists.
The letter one purge victim received is
posted in the full story at the link below:

Cross-posted from michiganliberal.com

Remember a few weeks ago when my ex-boss and East Lansing political list kingpin Mark
Grebner (D) called attention to the massive statewide mailing Secretary of State Terri Lynn
Land's (R) office sent out to all registered voters. Remember when he suggested it could be
part of an effort by Land to "clean up" the state voter file?

....So the state is trying to clean up the voter rolls. Big deal. What's the problem?

Well, for one thing, the State of Michigan has no authority to do this. Under Michigan law (MCL 168.509), only city or township clerks have the ability to strike people from the voter rolls. Terri Land may not like that law. But that's what it says.

1. Boy those Michigan people are sure a transient bunch!
...massive statewide mailing Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land's (R) office sent out to all registered voters.
(Emphasis is mine.]

The voter registration you currently hold in the city or township listed above may be canceled as we have been advised that you no longer reside at the address recorded on your voter registration.

So, assuming the details of this story are correct, the SOS is claiming to have been advised that every registered voter in the state of Michigan has moved since they originally registered. No one in the state is living in the precinct for which they are registered (or at least so sayeth the SOS).

2. According to the article, only about 230,000 were mailed.
There must be way more registered voters than that in Michigan.

Great article!

3. You're right.
It does say that further down, so the article seems to contradict itself. The 230,00 figure is more believable. But it still is apparently an illegal action. I wonder if she can prove that she actually has evidence that these people have moved? (That' a rhetorical question, of course she can't.)

5. I haven't checked the mail yet.
I live here, too. I wonder when I'll get mine.

Hey, any good ideas on how to defeat Walberg?

7. I've met her challenger, Sharon Renier a few times
She seems like a likable person, but frankly, she isn't a really strong candidate and she doesn't have any money to run the campaign she would need to to beat this guy. He won by spending millions of dollars pandering to the wing nut anti abortion homophobes in the primary, which is about 13% of the electorate. I am pretty discouraged about the prospects because I think that a big percentage of the people eligible to vote in this district don't give a shit about what is being done to them by the idiots that get elected. I would have liked to have seen Democratic leadership not right off this district like they seem to have, and I doubt that they will put the money in that they would need to in order to make it viable. I am absolutely certain he does not represent the majority of his constituents and that will become apparent pretty quickly after he takes office. Maybe in 2 years we'll have a serious candidate and the money to make him a 1 termer.
