Ok, Here's some ACTION people can take in CA
you can go testify at SoS hearings to ask that votepad be certified so at least there will be a non-machine ballot marking device choice to comply with HAVA reg. that requires accessible device at every polling place. Counties think they have to have computerized devices to meet HAVA reqts for accessible device; if votepad gets approved, will be formidable alternative

2. From their website, vote-pad.com:

The Voting-on-Paper Assistive Device, called the “Vote-PAD,” is an inexpensive, non-electronic, voter-assist device that helps people with a broad range of visual or dexterity impairments to vote independently.

The Vote-PAD can be used in any jurisdiction that uses voter-marked ballots. It is customized for each ballot in each election to provide access to the precinct’s hand-counted or optically-scanned paper ballot.

/snip/

“I can’t use my fingers, so I have to hit a touch screen with my whole hand and I get lots of error messages. I can use the Vote-PAD.” ~ Maria Matos, Boston Center for Independent Living (Tester with quadriplegia)

Supplementing existing voter-assist methods with Vote-PADs is a responsible way of ensuring accessible provisional voting and voting during breakdowns.

6. oops, sorry didn't get to your request sooner
(am under weather!) but thanks to bleever, the link to more info. has been posted.

If people are unable to attend the hearings, they have up until I believe 5 workdays (or a week, not sure) following hearing to submit written comments (see fax and email info below). I heard from a bureaucrat that the SoS is more likely to read comments if they are limited to a page per person. I suggest getting comments in ASAP!!
