Help America Recount Fund - new 527 group set up for recount funding
:dem: I just found this on AAR's Unfiltered blog:

http://www.helpamericarecount.org/

WEDNESDAY NOV 10, Washington D.C. -- Consumer groups rallying citizens for recounts in Ohio, Florida; voters can fund audits of Ohio and court challenges in Florida by donating to HelpAmericaRecount.org, a 527 tax exempt organization set up exclusively for recount funding. If you want to buy a recount in Ohio you don't need to live there...you do need to be a US citizen and you need to get out your check book. How much is Democracy worth to you...starting next week no one can stop us from auditing Ohio, we're gonna get em.

Black Box Voting, a nonpartisan, nonprofit consumer protection group for elections, has been investigating election irregularities for two years. The group has honed in on voting machines, citing problems with internal audit logs, tamperability, improper testing and certification, and bogus results. The group is now calling for citizen-initiated recounts.

snip

Using a little-known provision in Ohio law, any five Ohioans who did not vote for the winning candidate can file for recounts. In Florida, citizens can file to contest the election, county by county. Black Box Voting researchers are helping to identify key counties with the worst anomalies, for hand counts and other audits, to detect computer intrusions and vote count discrepancies.

Nader has set the pace for proper auditing, insisting on a hand count of New Hampshire’s Diebold optical scan machines. According to Black Box Voting Executive Director Bev Harris, this method, along with other auditing, is essential to verify machine results, because running ballots through the machines a second time is not a meaningful audit.

1. What's happening with the money
I sent to Kerry's GELAC fund? If they're not going to use it, I sure wish they'd send it to this group.

3. I signed up with Help America Audit...

...and I still haven't heard back from them. What are they doing with all the money that Randi Rhodes raised for them anyways? I would be a little ticked off if I gave them money and had no clue what they were doing with it, or did one of the five things we can do immediately and saw no results from it.

NOTE: I am not trying to spread discouragement or stop the recount or anything. I'm just trying to piss someone off enough that they'll tell me what's going on with blackboxvoting.org so I can help.

4. Thanks for posting. This is immensely important.
This is a result of DUers efforts! Sorta a DU saves Democracy grassroots effort! The fund is a 527 organization, and it's affiliated with (read started by) Bev's BlackBoxVoting.org and my organization, National Ballot Integrity Project. The reason it's a separate organization is that the other two organizations can't legally fund recounts because they can affect elections (we hope!) ... so we had to go the 527 route.

Please donate and circulate the link to your friends, families and email lists in general. Bev had hoped to announce it on Randi Rhodes' show this afternoon, but Randi didn't make it in today. In the meantime, let's rock and roll!

Stephanie has a great letter to send around on a separate thread.

5. Constructive Criticism
*I* don't doubt you at all... but a lot of people will if you don't get your ducks in a row. I know none of my extended family will donate to a website where some of the pages aren't working.

Not drying to be a snot about it... I'm a web designer by trade and KNOW how this kind of stuff can effect your organization in a negative way.

10. Agreed, that website doesn't really say "feel secure giving us your money"
Thought about linking my parents to it, but will probably ask for a donation myself, instead.

9. Do we have to call it a recount?
The media may not be covering issues of voter fraud and Diebold computer manipulation, but when they get a sniff of a grassroots Democrat organisation pushing for a recount, it's going to be bitch and moan 2000 all over again.

It shouldn't be a recount, it should be a COUNT. Or a proper count, if it has to be any kind of count at all. Personally, I think the smartest position would involve posing as concerned citizens who are lobbying for a reasonable Computerised Voting Evaluation Process. We're not contesting, we're learning. Otherwise we're never going to get public opinion on our side; swing voters, registered democrats or otherwise. America has a short attention span.

13. I donated money
using my credit card, to DNC, the J/K general campaign, and also to their GELAC fund because I live here in FL and knew they would really need that GELAC $$.

I can't believe they aren't using it, or giving it to someone who will! I am almost at the point of "disputing" the charges....$500 worth. They ain't doin no legal stuff....I didn't get what I paid for!
