Bob Taft's office as his own inspector general requests hundreds of records.
Inspector General Tom Charles has asked Taft for several years' worth of phone records and e-mails for three ex-employees as well as for Taft's current communications' director, Orest Holubec. A request for such a large amount of information by an investigator is unprecedented in the six years Taft has held office.
In his letter, sent Monday, Charles says he wants to know more about items the governor's staff may have received from coin dealer Tom Noe. Charles' office also is investigating Noe's investment of $50 million in rare coins, several of which are missing.
"During the course of our investigation, information has come to light that certain members of the Gov.'s staff may have received lodging accommodations and other items by Mr. Noe," Charles' letter said. Taft's office is complying with the request, said spokesman Mark Rickel. "No conclusions have been drawn," he said. "It's an ongoing investigation by the inspector general."
