Conyers to Carter: James Baker 'Inappropriate' for Blue-Ribbon Election Commission!

Ranking Minority House Judiciary Comm. Member Calls for True Voting Rights Advocates to Be Included on Commission

In a letter sent yesterday by Congressman John Conyers, the ranking minority member of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, to former-President Jimmy Carter, Conyers has expressed his "strong opposition" to the "conflicting interest" of having Bush/Cheney loyalist, James A. Baker, III serve as the Co-Chair of a recently seated blue-ribbon commission set to investigate Election 2004.

-snip-

The BRAD BLOG can also confirm that Mark F. (Thor) Hearne, II, the National Attorney for Bush/Cheney '04 Inc. and leader of the recently invented, phony GOP front group calling themselves the "non-partisan" American Center for Voting Rights (ACVR) has been seated on the Academic Advisory board for this commission!

5. Baker and ACVR have been put in place as obstructionists to the truth...
pure and simple.

Conflict of interest is an understatement.

How fortunate we are to have Conyers on the side of the people...

Thank you, thank you, thank you Congressman Conyers!! And thanks BradBlog for keeping us informed!

6. Also, on the Board, Colleen McAndrews:

Here it is:
Mc Andrews is a Partner in:
Bell, McAndrews, Hiltachk, & Davidson, LLP
Election & Campaign Lawyers

Reply which I received from Christian Berthelsen, reporter for the S.F. Chronicle, who covered the Calif Court Case where Schwarzenegger's Citizens to Save California successfully won a ruling eliminating limits on contributions for ballot and initiative measures:
“The gov's law firm is Bell, McAndrews and Hiltachk, Chuck Bell is his regular lawyer (and for the CRP) but was not available Friday. CSC is represented by Nielsen, Merksamer (etc etc etc), and their lawyer is Jim Parinello. “

More on McAndrews

GOVERNOR ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER'S CALIFORNIA RECOVERY TEAM

The California Recovery Team is a ballot measure, grassroots and legislative advocacy organization that will provide the monetary and public support necessary for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to achieve his ongoing reform agenda. The CRT is a California 501(c)(4) public benefit corporation.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is the Honorary Chairman of the California Recovery Team, an organization that will provide the platform for the Governor to take his legislative and ballot measure priorities directly to the public through personal appearances, media outreach, paid advertising and, when necessary, the ballot box by utilizing the initiative process.

The California Recovery Team will be the principal organization supporting the passage of the Governor’s Reform Agenda, which will likely require both legislative action and statewide initiatives
• The organization's executive director is Martin Wilson; Renee Croce is the finance director; and Tom Hiltachk is the general counsel. All three individuals played similar roles in the Schwarzenegger campaign for Governor. "

Interesting Note:
Two weeks ago, when I was doing research on Mc Pherson's Transition Team for the Calif SoS office, I was able to pull up
Hiltachk and his law firm on a search at :www.findlaw.com
Today, Hiltachk and McAndrews wouldn't come up there...........
