I feel for all of you, and I admire what you're doing.
Although I loathe John Howard and all he stands for, and while I
think he fought a deceitful and dirty election campaign, when I
stepped into the voting booth in Sydney a month ago, I felt
absolutely confident that my vote would be recorded as I wished it
to be. This is a very precious thing, and I'm realising that to
a greater extent than ever while watching the fallout from last
Tuesday's elections in the U.S.

While I detest Bush and his crowd, had I believed this election
result was the will of the American people I'd accept that, even as
I had to accept the election of Howard, however much I might regret
it. But to see one of the great democracies of the world reduced
to the level of the kind of sham vote we normally only see in third
world autocracies demeans the very word Democracy and all the high
ideals it should convey. I can remember Jack Kennedy, and he
inspired in me political ideals that I hold to this day, and I feel
a deep sadness to see his America subverted in this way.

I feel your anger and your pain. I'm doing what I can to get the
message out there to friends and also to our newspapers - it's a
matter of principle. I'm looking now at the tragedy unfolding in
Falluja - it's sickening, and I don't think the world can afford
another four years of this madness.

It's up to all of us, in whatever country we live, to do our best
to get rid of this bunch of zealots and fanatics and their warped
ideas. Let's get out there and save the world!

(BTW, "Waltzing Matilda" is one of my all-time favorite songs.)

Have you seen this? Might be a useful resource for your contacts (tho please remind them, it's a discussion forum and a very partisan one at that, which doesn't mean that some of the info contained herein isn't solid gold anyway):

4. That's great, that you're passing along how many of us there are...
who are absolutely mortified by events. Yes--supposedly--there were 59 million dumb people here. But there are 56 million of us who weren't fooled. And we are stricken.

Hey, are you a waltzin' Matilda?

5. The farther away
from the center of the disease, the easier to see

and the more powerless to do anything. Or is it the same paralysis, just spread out, the difficulty of opposing it making it easier to cry out?

Not to offend anyone, but there is no great judgment on the human race here. Anyone in the Bush circle or near it could speak out. The next levels the ability and the fear decreases. The fear persists. The ability to be effective in resistance weakens. The power exerted to match the inaction and the fear swells, tempting violence.

Cancer can be ignored, worried about, denied, triumphant. It is still cancer.

Americans make capitalism their god of hope. The world has America as the center of money and power. For now, we are all circling the abyss. Enjoy its outer reaches.

13. Bookmarking and saving all the links,
and forwarding on the clearest and most succinct.

There has to date been no mention of this in our media, not even the
Fairfax papers (we can forget about the Murdoch press), or our
national public broadcasters, the ABC or SBS.

If we can get just one reputable journalist to pick it up outside
the U.S., it will help spread the word. I can't help wondering
whether they don't know, or whether the lid has been put on the
matter here too.

Your support means a lot. Every time I see anyone from another country post support or sympathy, I am comforted by the knowledge that not everyone thinks all Americans are idiots. Unfortunately I think the impression the majority of people get is what the loud mouthed zealots present. I am ashamed and embarrassed for them because they do not represent the best of Americans. Thanks again.

14. If it makes you feel any better, I don't feel so proud of my countrymen
right now. They voted the wrong way!

We can't blame the machines in our case - it was the people.

We're all screwed now.

In any case, it should be an interesting four years. I just wish our only problem was that we had an idiot for president. Unfortunately, there's so much corruption, greed, lying, and murder that it makes it hard to laugh.
