Why would Dean think that a citizen initiative would be needed in states like Calif with a Dem legislature (&, until recently a Dem Sec of State!), or, say, those with a Dem gov, or whatever (lots of Dem county registrars)?
He says it's the Repubs. Well, so...why aren't the Dems implementing reforms where possible, where they have power?
Say we get an initiatve on the ballot in Calif (not an easy thing to do--rules very stacked against the public). Then a whole raft of CA DEMOCRATIC politicians--Perata, Romero, McCormack, in collusion with their collegially confirmed new Repub Sec of State McPherson, and the Sac Bee and the LA Times and the SF Chron, come out against it; say it's not necessary; says it 's fatally flawed; say it will be too expensive, blah, blah, bla. I can just hear them.
Then what do we do, Howard, when Dems are the enemy?
Conyers recently said BushCons are going to kill election reform in Congress. I haven't heard Dean admit that (maybe he has, just dunno). Dean HAS said best bet is state by state--whhich means local grass roots. But I still don't get why INITIATIVES are necessary in states with Dem state power.
I'm feeling a litte sour today. I've been involved in a citizen initiative and frankly I think it's impossible without a very big zillionaire backer, and even then...
And I'm just so angry at HAVA corruption, at Dem leaders lying, at Dem leaders failing to cry foul on the fraudulent election SYSTEM...BEFORE the election, at Dem leaders support of Mideast war...
And then to be told that WE have to fix this with INITIATIVES...
Why isn't the Dem Party leadership in Calif SPONSORING an intiative to REMOVE BushCon control of central vote tabulators and voting machines...and to put the goddamned word BALLOT into our law...and to tell the BushCon Feds at EAC where they can stick it...
or why aren't they doing this as legislation?
and why are citizens having to fight backfires against the WEAKENING of our standards--backfires lit by DEMOCRATS?
Well, maybe we can still get things done in the CA legislature, despite all.
But I really have to wonder what Dean has uncovered, and what he thinks of it all--probably far more than the little peek at the stink pile that we've gotten here in Calif--and what Dean is up against, to have to ask the CITIZENS to do it, and NOT the elected Democratic leaders!
Whew. End of rant.
