Printer fails to satisfy e-vote activists

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Three months after the presidential election, one of the nation's biggest makers of touch-screen voting machines has created a companion printer that spits out paper records.

The prototype that Diebold Inc. is now touting is exactly what some critics of the ATM-like machines have been demanding for several years.

Even so, paper records alone are not enough to satisfy computer scientists who say transparency in the electronic machines' design and software must complement paper backups.

The Diebold prototype seeks to reassure voters by displaying their selections under a piece of glass or plastic alongside the touch-screen machine. If they spot a problem, they can cancel the ballot and start over. And while voters can't touch the paper records, elections officials will be able to use them to verify close elections.

1. Diebold Printer = secrecy of ballot gone
The printer doesn't cut the paper ballot and drop it into a box. It rolls up inside the printer, leaving the EXACT ORDER of the voters for all to see.

All I have to do is find voter #7 from the sign in sheet and then go find vote #7 on the roll.

Diebold knew (and knows) this printer will never be approved because of this flaw. It's a delaying tactic to prevent voter verified paper ballots.

2. When diebolt programs voting machines to DEFAULT to bush
and every other dirty trick in the book -- how many of us believe there will be another "close" election??

The GOPigs are already at work fixing the next election -- and unless the Dems get proactive -- YESTERDAY. Forget about ever having a Dem Prez or control of either house.

All the the Diebold machines should be destroyed.

Paper ballots and hand counting ONLY will satisfy me that the election was fair.

6. "Transparency in the design and software."
THAT is exactly what I want. If that makes me a paranoid freak, then guilty as charged.
