Editor and Publisher magazine is the professional journal of the newspaper trade. It has been an advocate of better reporting on Bush. Today's column by its Washington editor spanks Bushco for its secrecy.

Will you take five minutes and write to its Washington editor and tell him about the alleged news blackout on election fraud in broadcast media? Write a short note about your deep, deep concern. It will be up to newspapers to cover what TV refuses to cover.

PLEASE flood his mailbox. And copy your letters below.

Joe Strupp
Senior Editor (Newsroom)
jstrupp@editorandpublisher.com

Here's an excerpt from his column today:

And now that Bush has managed to keep his job, his administration's effort at controlling media dissemination and tightening secrecy is likely to expand. Bush was uncooperative enough with the press when his 2000 victory was questionable, but with a majority win, don't expect him or his people to be any more forthcoming.

That means reporters, editors, and publishers (many of whom count the president as their friend), have to demand closer scrutiny of a supposedly "straight-talking" president who offers little respect for the public's right to know. Newspapers need to take an even stronger role as watchdogs.

The first chance they had to show their stuff, however, offers little in the way of hope that things will change.

At last Thursday's first post-election press conference, Bush responded with routine answers to easy questions about whether he planned to change his cabinet and if he expected Democrats to work with him, responding yes to both. But he failed to answer more serious inquiries about whether more troops were needed in Iraq and how he would appoint Supreme Court justices. When the president responded with non-answers, no one challenged him to be more specific, too often the norm for the White House press corps.

At the same event, Bush appeared more arrogant than ever, half-joking that he would follow a "one-question" rule and asking if most of the reporters in the room would continue to cover him. When many raised their hands, he said, "Gosh, we're going to have a lot of fun then." If reporters on the Bush beat continue to let him slide, his fun will be our frustration.

Re: George W. Bush's "one question rule"

Many a truth is said in jest. George W. Bush is not joking. His so-called mandate? What he means is "blank check."

The wannabe journalists who covered for him since 2000, and the sycophants who pass for political pundits, I only wish they could suffer the same repercussions which will fall upon most of us out here with little or no power. It's no wonder they're called the "press corpse."

I think it's too late to wake up and smell the coffee. I think the house is on fire.

Thanks, grasswire. We're howling at a raging hurricane which threatens to drown us out completely.

edit, so disgusted I'm making mistakes

I applaud you for living up to your responsibility as the 'Free Press'. The American people deserve and expect the news media to inform them. Since the TV media is bowing down to the FASCIST organization in DC. I thank you again for taking your constitutional responsibilities seariously.

15. My email
First of all, let me thank you for your efforts in trying to make the media more accountable in its political coverage. Like many other Americans, I am deeply concerned over the relative dearth of reporting on widespread irregularities in last week’s election. Specifically, I refer to issues with improper auditing of voting machines, the lack of paper trails with computerized voting machines, and inexplicable disparities between exit polls and ballot counts in many counties. Additionally, problems with inadequate resources to conduct voting, refusal of provisional ballots, and outright voter suppression and intimidation have been reported on numerous Internet sites. These allegations need to be thoroughly checked and the people deserve to be informed of the situation. I do realize that we are at war in Iraq and the major military action in Fallujah would seem to preempt most domestic concerns. However, the integrity of our electoral system is a matter of serious consequence and warrants immediate and decisive attention.

Thank you for your consideration.

8. Hope it helps
Mr. Strupp,

Any observant, intelligent citizen can see that George Bush is not competent enough to speak informatively to the press, or the American people for that matter, on important issues and policies. Is he arrogant, ignorant, or both? Looking back on the last four years it seems the media has either been duped by this administration or is it a matter of complaisance and perhaps compliance. So whether the media is complying too a demand or has the disposition to please the powers that be, it is not just the American people that suffer this travesty.
These times call for courage for the good of mankind. I, a humble wife and mother from the midwest, urge your industry and it’s leaders to be steadfast and true to it’s duty to serve the American public and the world. As history has shown us it is a matter of life and death. I beseech you, for the good of your country and the welfare of the world, do not allow the story to be buried or the truth to be stifled.

Desperately seeking the truth in America,

Dear Joe Strupp -

I am a concerned citizen writing to you about the voter fraud which seems to have occurred in this election.

"Seems" is actually a bit of an understatement.

We have plenty of evidence that it occurred, enough to warrant a full-scale investigation.

It is horrifying to think that someone is now able to steal the presidency, and whatever other offices they want, by simply hacking into Windows PC's, hitting the Microsoft Access file which is used to store the vote totals, and changing the numbers.

But it has been demonstrated on live television that this is exactly what is possible with the "new" system to count votes.

In case you hadn't heard about this, there are widespread accounts in several of the swing states, namely Florida and Ohio, where serious discrepencies occur. Discrepencies that defy all logic.

And the discrepencies only occur where there was optical scanning and computer tabulation of paper ballots.

Also there are many instances of computer "glitches" giving Bush thousands of votes, more than there were voters in the precinct.

Here are a few links for you to check out.

I really don't want to "weep for my country", but it's starting to look like we all should.

Please investigate this.

Thank you.

13. Here is my letter to Mr. Strupp
Dear Mr. Strupp:

Having grown up in a household where news, both TV and print, was avidly devoured, I was taught that our journalists were on the frontline of truth. The journalistic tradition of the United States is one of free speech and providing the people with a full report of what is occurring both within our country as well as abroad. There have been many instances where our media and journalists have broken the stories that have turned the tide of history. These fine men and women, together with historians, provide us a way to view our world and make sense of that which occurs around us.

Unfortunately, the press is no longer able to be that bastion of freedom, for the George W. Bush administration is the least transparent of recent history. Secrecy seems to be the name of the game in today’s Washington. There is a saying in the Addiction and Mental Health community, “you are as sick as your secrets”, and that is just what worries me. There is a sickness seeping into our national life, policy made in secret and never subjected to the light of day, a 911 report held until after an election and even today, not yet released, a higher percentage of documents marked Top Secret and not available through FOIA.

Even more worrisome, is that this secrecy has now morphed into silence. Journalistic silence, which is the worst type in a democracy that depends on journalists to provide the transparency so desperately needed to maintain a free and open society. A cursory review of the internet media turns up troublesome data showing clear voter irregularities concerning our recent national election. Precincts that record thousands more votes than registered voters. Ballots that were mysteriously “lost”. Voter roles that were purged of qualified voters. And in every case, these voter irregularities favored one party, George W. Bush’s Republican Party.

President Bush claims a “mandate” based on receiving 51% of the vote. If this voter irregularity is true, and if President Bush did not receive this 51% “self-professed mandate”, then we the people have a right to know. When we cannot trust our elections, democracy has ended. And yet, other than a few newspapers and one or two off-hand mentions on TV news, this information is not even being discussed. I would expect journalists to be shouting from the rafters that vote tallies don’t add up, that voters were intimidated, that voter irregularity occurred on a large scale. And yet, on this front, it is quiet enough to hear a pin drop.

And drop it will if there isn’t a review of this “so called mandated election”. War and more war, privatization of social security, silenced science, sweeping tax reform and a possible draft are all on the table due to this unopposed 51% “mandate”.

It is my hope that our journalists are just being prudent and doing due diligence before beginning to report on the many instances of voter irregularity. I would hate to think that the frontline of freedom and democracy has been silenced. I hope that November 2, 2004 is not the date that future historians term “The Day Democracy Died.”

Sincerely,

Dear Joe,

Evidence is being posted all over the internet of the massive vote fraud perpetrated by Far Right. The 30 minute online documentary by author Bev Harris called Votergate at http://www.votergate.tv/
shows how easily the election could be stolen through e-voting technology designed to be insecure.

If watching the movie wets your curiousity then Black Box Voting is where the battle to prove fraud will be won or lost. "Black Box Voting (.ORG) is conducting the largest Freedom of Information action in history. At 8:30 p.m. Election Night, Black Box Voting blanketed the U.S. with the first in a series of public records requests, to obtain internal computer logs and other documents from 3,000 individual counties and townships. There are really good letters here. Thanks to you that put all the links in. Keith Olbermann's blog tonight stated that providing real data to a journalist is one of the key's to getting their attention. By showing something real, they can know they aren't dealing with the tin foil hat crowd (got mine right on my head and am making more for my family!). So you guys with all the links Rock!!!!!

My dear Mr Strupp,

To some of us, active in certain circles on the Internet, it seems amazing that the issue of the vote count having been rigged has not gotten more coverage. Maybe it is just us, reading and passing some very damning information around for nearly a week, being ahead of the curve but it leaves me somewhat disappointed in the media who should be investigating and exposing rather than merely reporting and spinning.

I hope you will take a little time to look into this. A monumental fraud has been committed against America herself. If left to stand there is a good chance that the election machinery in this country will forever be a rigged game where the winner is not democracy.

Thank You

Joe,
I loved your article "Pressing the President", what I have to ask you next relates directly to what you wrote--specifically this quote:
"...his administration's effort at controlling media dissemination and tightening secrecy is likely to expand." I say it already has! There is a rumor that TV media has a blackout for anything relating to voter irregularities and voting machine fraud last week. Keith Olbermann from MSNBC actually aired some of the material last night on his show "Countdown with Keith Olbermann".

Please look here for show details and the rumor of a media blackout:

19. I hope you don't mind. I used yours as a base for mine.
Dear Mr. Strupp,

I appreciated your article "Pressing the President" and thank you for your efforts to improve media scrutiny in the United States. In your article, you wrote"...administration's effort at controlling media dissemination and tightening secrecy is likely to expand." I cannot escape the feeling that the administration has already succeeded in suppressing the media and investigative journalism in particular. His behavior in last week's press conference was nothing short of shocking.

I am personally distressed at the lack of media coverage on voter irregularities and voting machine fraud in last week's election. Keith Olbermann from MSNBC actually aired some of the material last night on his show "Countdown with Keith Olbermann," but other outlets did not pick up the story this morning. The press must mobilize immediately and demand an accounting of these irregularities or they will have participated in converting our representative democracy into a dictatorship in a single day.
