9. Since I'm streaming at work, I opened two browsers
and have one in each, plus one for DU. My speaker has both of them coming over on top of each other. I'm taping C-SPAN 1 at home, so as the senate gets going, I'll probably watch that more.

11. Aaaaaaaaaaaaand it's BOXER!
For all our lives we have fought for different kind of justice. Now we have a new fight -- a fight for electoral justice. That every person's vote has as much weight as any other persons. In the voting booth every one is equal. Why did people have to wait hours in the rain to vote. Waiting in line until 4 AM to vote. There were only two voting machines. Voters in poor and AA communities had to wait. Holding back 68 machines in working order in warehouses. Why in Colombus estimated 5000 to 10000 voters left polling places in frustration. How many others didn't even bother to vote. Franklin county, voting machine awarding extra votes to Shrub.

We couldn't even get a hearing on the paper trail amendment.

The centerpiece of this country is democracy; the centerpiece of democracy is ensuring the right to vote. Let us not turn away from the things that happened in Ohio. People are dying to bring democracy to the far corners of the world. Let's fix it here!

I'm a little tired of him quoting from newspapers as if their editorials are legally binding. His comments that the bi-partisan election has not a shred of evidence of manipulation is downright insulting. Would someone please, please mention Blackwell and his conflict of interest?

How can these people stand up and say these things in good conscience? They are lying their tails off.

Just love the language he's using... "conspiracy theorists, naysayers are loud and repetitious, but few in number...."

"It would take 1000's of conspirators to pull this off."

79. Dayton says "democracy not a perfect process"

Now supporting Boxer's concerns (huh?)
Calling for hearings to consider election problems.

In summary, I guess he thinks Boxer has some legitimate concerns,
but shouldn't be questioning now, in this way.

Needs a good therapist IMO.

96. Dick Durbin.
I will vote to certify, people are saying that the irregularites do not rise to a level to challenge the outcome. KE had 2000 lawyers on the ground on election day. The nature of this debate do not go to the results of the election but rather to our electoral system. I thank her (Boxer). gives us an opportunity to look at the challenges we face. Voters who wish to cast a vote are not certain that their vote will be counted, that they can vote in a fair and convient matter. On a bipartisan basis, we can and should do better.

OK, I thought Stabenow was good. talking about all of the voting problems. HAVA -- provisional ballot was rendered "practicially wortheless" -- Ohio SOS. Don't support holding up certification of result, but do support.

It's Kennedy! For the second time in a row there were so many complaints about how voting happened. Right to vote is the cornerstone of our democracy. HAVA was not adequate. He's bringing up Voting Rights Act! wooo! "we still have work to do, the votes of many who wanted to vote were not in fact counted." GOOD STUFF

Far from clear whether or not this was intentional. Opportunity to admit 2004 election was flawed.

160. Kennedy and Wyden
Kennedy: We are registering our protest against the flawed voting process. Wooooooooooo! No democracy worth the name can allow such a flawed election process to take place again.

Wyden D-Oregon. Extraordinarly important for both sides to be gracious. Also important for us to pay attention to requirements. PAPER TRAIL. OR system worked, worked well. Not the case in many places in our country. Last time we talked about this we spent weeks on 1 dog in the Midwest would not vote (WTF is he talking about.) I don't think hundreds of thousands of voters who don't think their vote count should get it swept under the rug.

Credible journalist reports: NC, INdiana, washington, and OHIO. Not of a volume that would have changed the outcome of the election (phooooo!) Critial work ahead of this body. He wrote to Conyers to ask him to address this?! whoa. I was author of section on provisional ballots. Ohio SOS decision to restrict prov. ballots not consistent with what Sentate had in mind when we wrote this provision.

I LIKE HIM, he's cool.

By doing this, there's no way what they're saying can be argued with.

Lautenberg! D-NJ. I agree with Boxer. We're trying to spread Democracy around the world and we need Democracy here at home. I'm not challenging Shrub's victory, but there have been reports of systematic voter disenfranchisement. We'd be derelict in our duty if we failed to pay attention to this. Conyers report. Voting machines in minority D wards, waiting 10 hours. Precinct closed at 9:25 in the AM because its voting machines weren't working. Voter suppression: CAGING! Wooo! Ken Blackwell deviated from election laws by severely restricting provo ballots. Voter registration on 80 pound paper weight! Wooooo! Troubling because he wasn't just SOS but was cochair of BC campaign in OH. allowing him to do both is boooooooooooooooooogus. Ok 'blatant conflict of interest.'

FEDERAL ELECTION INTEGRITY ACT will prohibit this! YEAH! :loveya: Lautenberg!

Re: Blackwell running for governor letter! YEAH! I will introduce this act later. Boxer's object won't be sustained but that doesn't mean we shoudn't discuss it.

211. Clinton.
Questions about fairness, integrity are not confined to the state of OH. Questions were raised with respect to this election. Can we assure the continuity of our democratic process. We admired people of Ukraine. In a few weeks we're going to see an election in Iraq. People dying in Iraq for a right to cast a vote. We stood with Ukraine, Iraq. I worry that if this body doesn't stand up on a bipartisan basis for the right to vote here at home our moral authority will be weakened. Freedom our most precious value. We have worked to form a more perfect union. At first not everyone permitted to vote in our own company. We expanded the franchise. Anniversary of Voting rights act. How will we move it into the 21st century. I'd be standing here saying this no matter what the outcome of the election. I worry whether it's a D or R admin or a local election, we are on a slippery slope. Talking about verifiable paper trail -- didn't even get a hearing in front of the rules committee.

India's election, 550 million people voted. They voted on electronic voting machines. They had uniform standards, nonpartisan board that oversaw the election, did it with integrity. surely we should be setting the standards.

"applaud Boxer for allowing us to discuss the issue"]

"more insidious forms of voter disenfranchisement continue"

- calls telling voters election was on a different day
- voter registration problems (destroyed dem. reg forms)
- security guards hired to scare off voters at polling places

Ohio: problems with integrity of electronic voting machines
NV: has electronic voting with paper trail, should happen everywhere.

222. Reid
Referring to Voting Rights act. Abuses in Florida 4 years ago. Insidious form of disenfranchisement continues. Phone calls to hispanic, black areas in NV telling the voters that election day was Nov. 3. Reg processes in NV tainted by destruction of voter registration form. Proven, it happened, investigation still underway. Earlier elections: people dressed in uniforms stood at polling places to intimidate minority voters. Hope there will be more done to determine what went on in Ohio.

HAVA was meant to cure disenfranchisement of voters. These problem damage our system. Requires strong laws, strong hearts to root us out. My hope that our debate will lead to curing these problems. Lack of measures to ensure integrity of electronic voting machines. Nevada was only state with total e-voting with paper trail. Printed paper, this is the way it should happen all over America.

Jr. Senator from Nevada introduced legislation to include paper trails everywhere, will continue to put this forward.
