Questions about getting to Washington, D.C. on Jan 6th PLEASE HELP
Edited on Wed Dec-29-04 08:02 PM by Faye
Does anyone know exactly what the street names are surrounding the park where the gathering/protests/vigil - will start? I need to know so I can make good plans. I think I'll be taking the bus there on the 5th at night - stay at a hotel right around there (or the cheapest, dirtiest motel i can find) and then take a taxi to the park in the morning.

Oh, but i need to know wtf street this is all on. Is it Pennsylvania Avenue, or somewhere else?

4. Hotels in DC are $$$$$$$
Edited on Wed Dec-29-04 08:43 PM by LiberalEsto
Come out to Gaithersburg MD and stay at the Comfort Inn, Days Inn, Red Roof, etc and you will save a bundle. You can even ride in on the Metro Red Line from Shady Grove and not have to worry about parking in DC. DC parking is a major pain, and they ticket like mad.
To find motels and check rates, go to Google and search under "Gaithersburg motels".

5. Good advice
as for the location of the protestors, just get on the sidewalks downtown and follow your nose. Someone is bound to know.

Might I suggest that you stay outside of DC and take the Metro or the Marc train to the Capitol? Where are you coming from?

The room rates will be much better for what you get, and Union Station (both a Metro and Marc/Amtrak stop) is like 3 blocks from the Capitol.

The Rally is in Upper Senate Park. The Senate is the North side of the Capitol building, so I'm assuming that the park is on that side of the building. The East side of the building is at a grade higher than the West, (Thus those steps in the front) so the park is probably the one between the Capitol and the Library of Congress. We would be much more visible to the public on the other side (West) by the reflecting pool.

The street would technically be North Capitol Street, but, it doesn't start for a couple of blocks from the building. Pa. Ave. comes in and ends there too. Along with Constitution Ave. N.E. which I think is the street right beside the park.

On edit: Anywhere out of downtown that has access to the Metro is a good bet. Landover, Gaithersburg, College Park, Silver Springs, Ballston, Alexandria, Falls Church, ... Shop around.

near where I stay in Columbia area. DC is an expensive town to visit more or less live there, but I can help you get a reasonable place out througher and pick you up if you like for the rally ?? I will more then likely take the metro down to town after getting closer into town near Lanham. I take the Orange line into the National Mall.

12. Well, only for You....
My kids will be at thier moms, so I have an open bedroom...

You can expect to pay at least $50 outside the Beltway, $150 downtown.

I was going to take MARC in the AM and Hang out at the National Gallery until noon.

10. Faye - I've offered a place to sleep, and so far have
no takers. Maybe the warning about the big dog scared them off.
Let me know if you are interested. I live in Northern Virginia, and will take the
Metro in. If you do chose a motel/hotel, the folks are right: you'll do much better outside the city.

11. Rally location
If you're coming in on the Metro, take the Blue/Orange line to Capitol South Station

Walk to rally site at Upper Senate Park (half mile walk)

Coming out of Capitol South station, go north on 1st or 2nd St. NE;
Go west on Constitution Ave, NW to Upper Senate Park

If you're coming in on the Red Line from the Gaithersburg area, get off at Metro Center to switch to the Orange/Blue line.

14. Faye, where are you coming from?
If it is from the west, your best bet is to stay about an hour out from D.C., then drive to the Metro and take it in.

I live an hour west of D.C., and if you are coming from the west I'd suggest staying in Manassas, VA, then driving the next morning (traffic is brutal!!) to the Vienna metro stop and taking the Orange Line in.

PM me for more info if this will work. Otherwise, if you're coming from points north or south Gaithersburg, MD makes sense. D.C.hotels are expensive to the nth degree.

16. If you wanna stay in DC
I've heard the Hotel Harrington is the cheapest place inside the city that's in a decent neighborhood. Don't know the prices. There's also a Red Roof Inn in Chinatown, 8th & F?, that's supposed to be pretty reasonable. You can easily walk to the park from Union Station if you take an AmTrak in. MD runs the MARC train (mtamaryland.com) from Baltimore to Union Station a few times a day on the weekend for half the price of Amtrak if that fits you. Good luck...
