Ideas for day trips from Munich?
Edited on Thu Jan-07-10 11:31 PM by lizerdbits
I've never posted in here before and actually haven't been around DU much lately. I'm leaving Saturday for a business trip to Munich and am expecting to come back the 23rd. I'd like to do a day trip on my free weekend (16th or 17th), I'm thinking something involving seeing the Alps. A few people have suggested taking a train to Austria or Switzerland so I get the view on the way to experience another city. Any suggestions? :)

ETA: I speak absolutely no German (took French in HS many years ago).

1. Here's a suggestion...
I live in Bavaria, and to someone who has never been here before would like to suggest - as a first taste - a trip to Neuschwanstein (aka Mad King Ludwig's Castle, even better known as the Disney Castle); located about two hours south of Munich. Very lovely!

In case you care to visit a place with a different slant on history there is Nuremberg, my hometown, and this is also where I currently live. Not speaking German should present no problems. Most Germans speak at least a bit of English. So don't even worry about the language angle. Should you decide on Nuremberg, I'd be happy to give you the Grand Tour! The town had its 950th birthday a few years ago, there's the castle, Albrecht Dürer's birthplace and so much more. Plus monuments from our recent, pathetic past. By train, you can reach Nuremberg from Munich in about 1 1/2 hours. No need to transfer anywhere.

Please let me know - you have a tour guide waiting for you!

2. Thank you tango-tee!
I've received several suggestions for Neuschwanstein so there's a good chance I'll be seeing it. If I also decide on Nuremberg I will send you a PM! :hi:

3. I wish you a wonderful trip!
At first sight, sometimes Germans can seem grumpy and stand-offish, but don't let that throw you for a loop. Bavarians are known for that. Underneath it all, we're pretty friendly and helpful, love good food and drink. In case you need any help while you're over here, just let me know.

Again, I hope your first experience in Germany will be a happy and memorable one!

4. 2 years ago we went to German to bring home a dog.
I was so impressed by the country and people.
We have made many friends now in Germany due to dogs and keep in touch.
It is a beautiful country. Have a great trip.
