Gilchrist out as fire union boss

Andy Gilchrist has been ousted as leader of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) by a left-wing candidate.

Matt Wrack beat the general secretary of five years in a union leadership ballot.

Mr Gilchrist led the bitter national strike over pay. The vote could set up a further set of confrontations with the government.

In a turn-out of more than 20,000 firefighters, Mr Wrack polled 12,833 votes. Mr Gilchrist got 7,259.

Comment: This is very interesting, in the sense that I don't know shit about the internal politicking of the FBU but they are a large union and it might be important. Any insights are more than welcome...
