Poll question: some polling information about northern ireland
Edited on Wed May-04-05 06:05 AM by RogueTrooper
This is all that is in there of this poll...

LESS than a third of British voters want Northern Ireland to stay in the UK and fewer than one in eight believe the IRA campaign is over for good, according to a Sunday Times/YouGov poll. The online survey of 1,400 electors found 46% favoured a united Ireland, only 30% want to keep Northern Ireland — and 25% don’t care. The two biggest political parties are blamed for the peace stalemate, with 42% saying Sinn Fein and the IRA are the main ones at fault while 18% blame Ian Paisley’s DUP. The poll found a profound distrust of the IRA: 64% believe the IRA will resume violence while only 12% believe the ceasefire will hold.

So, chaps, what are your view?

1. I clicked "Don't care"

mainly because I think they should hold a referendum on whether it should remain part of the UK or join with the rest of Ireland.

2. I clicked United Ireland...
but then I'm Irish.

Can't believe so few people think Ian Paisley is responsible... I guess he doesn't get the kind of coverage he used to!

3. I clicked 'keep N.I.' but I'm also 'don't care'
Or rather, none of my business.

I like the idea of the U.K. bringing together the diverse nations of these islands, but this is not a vehemently held view. If the people of Northern Ireland wish to join with the Irish Republic that is their choice; if they wish to remain as part of the U.K. (as it would appear that they do for the moment), then I fully support them in that choice.

I would (for what it's worth) apply exactly the same logic to the Scots or Welsh - I'm more than happy for them to join in the U.K., but if they wish to leave then they have my fullest support.

4. Just whatever the people in N.I. want
A dual sovereignty solution would make sense, although it'd never be enough for the Republican extremists and it would upset the Loyalisit extremists. Also some have suggested that the whole sectarian nastiness would become a redundant point if both Britain and Ireland further integrated into the E.U. in the long-term.

As a socialist the arguments over nationalistic sentiment either way disinterest me, it's just a casus belli for some to act like bigotted idiots.

I hope that people in Northern Ireland will choose not to vote for sectarian parties, by sectarian parties I mean those connected with terrorist groups and criminal gangs (such as PIRA, UVF, UFF/UDA, INLA, RIRA, LVF) and those who spout religious hatred (especially that windbang Ian Paisley).

6. I voted for keeping NI
Edited on Wed May-04-05 12:31 PM by Guy_Montag
because that's what the majority of the population in NI want.

When that changes, I'll change my vote.

On edit: I think some of our American cousins should remember that too.
