Kennedy's wife taken to hospital
The pregnant wife of Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy has been admitted to hospital, forcing the party to postpone its manifesto launch.

Sarah Kennedy has not gone into labour but is expected to give birth during the general election campaign.

Mr Kennedy cancelled his campaigning events for the rest of Monday and returned to London to be with his wife.

His deputy, Sir Menzies Campbell, will stand in for him. The manifesto will now be unveiled later this week.

1. Doesn't quite add up
"she is fine"; "she hasn't gone into labour"; but she's been admitted to hospital. Why?

2. Could be one of a thousand things, Mu.
Blood pressure problems, toxemia (kidney problems) ... lots of complications can happen late in a pregnancy.

3. Yes, but could you then say
"she is fine", as the spokesman said? At the least, he ought to have said "it's nothing serious".

4. Yikes - doesn't sound too good
But they are always very careful during late stage pregnancy.

I remember at one election I was helping out on, the candidate's wife was pregnant with twins (gave birth two days after the election) and already had two nigh-on hyper-active boys running round the house. I don't think that anybody in that house would like to repeat that election.
