Terror blunder: Profile of John Yates, new terrorism chief
John Yates, Scotland Yard's chief troubleshooter, has been named as Britain's new head of anti-terrorism after Bob Quick quit following his blunder.

In leading a series of major high-profile investigations over the past decade, he has become one of the country's best known officers, nicknamed affectionately "Yates of the Yard".

The 50-year-old Assistant Commissioner is regarded by senior colleagues as a dogged, reliable, straight-talking officer of exceptional ability.

The senior policeman established his reputation as a robust operator capable of handling cases in the media spotlight with his involvement in the perjury case of Lord Archer in 2001 and later the Who Wants to be a Millionaire fraud trial of Major Charles Ingram.
