Officer faces action over lost gun

An Army captain may face disciplinary action after she left a loaded gun in a supermarket toilet, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.

An investigation has been launched to find out how the weapon and 13 rounds of blank ammunition came to be lost during a military exercise in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, on Saturday.


It has been revealed that the pistol, which has been missing for two days, disappeared after the unnamed soldier left her waistband holster in the disabled toilet in a Sainsbury's supermarket.

Police were alerted when the captain, realising her blunder, rushed back to the store and discovered the US-made Sig Sauer 9mm automatic pistol had gone.

The officer, based at the HQ of the Army's Defence Intelligence and Security School, now faces a carpeting. The Defence Ministry is so embarrassed it has refused to discuss the soldier's rank or age, or even to name her regiment.

A spokesman who admitted the gaffe said: "We'll be looking at all the circumstances surrounding this case and taking a view about what to do with the individual. We're not giving details.

The woman was caught short while on Army manoeuvres. She popped into a Sainsbury's store to use its disabled toilet, removed her holster containing the deadly Sig Sauer P220 gun and placed it on the cistern.
