Scottish Parliament building wins Stirling Prize...noooo
Edited on Sat Oct-15-05 08:41 PM by McKenzie
This is not good Architecture nor is it good Urban Design. Miralles has created a building that does not respond well to its context and the public lobby is a gloomy cavern. The only good bit is the main chamber and that's really an interior design exercise.

Architecture Review and the AJ will be full of gushing praise...sigh.

<edit> grammar and wiping the tears off the page.

2. I'm know I'm outgunned on this one
Sigh...I just cannot bring myself to find anything good about it and I suspect it will not age well. Even the horrid St James Centre was lauded when it first reared its ugly head.

I hope you don't think I'm being unfair...ah jist dinnae like it...it's a guddle.

cheers

3. Well
I'm actually Aussie - and while I'm living in Edinburgh now and intend to for a few more years yet - I do plan to go home at some point so you will probably have to live with it longer.

I don't think comparing the St James Centre and the Parliament is fair. It looks great sometimes against the Crags, specially on a nice day like today.

I dod suspect that if it had come in on time and on budget (or at even close) people might be a bit better disposed to it.

4. Would that the parliament itself
start making headlines with its competence, rather than hearing about
the overpriced unairconditioned building they hunker in.

So far, if that parliament ceased to exist and all the taxpayers funds
refunded, would they not be better off. At least there would not be
a charade of second-tier politics in the scottish relegation zone whilst
the heavy wood goes to westminster.

5. Unfortunately...
I was born and bred in Edinburgh and now live in York, and IMHO the collective chip on Scotland's shoulder tends to relegate practicality and criticism to secondary importance. The people I meet in England share everything but an accent with the people I grew up with, but history wields a heavy and warped influence on Scottish politics.

6. I like it.
But then I'm making that assessment from London's medialand and don't actually have to deal with the building daily. However, I think the Welsh Assembly is very disappointing.

7. Medialand
It has good facilities for the press, the main chamber is fantastic and looks good.

I genuinely believ those Scots who don't like it are still pissed off at going 400 odd mil over budget and coming in 5 years late.
