James Hewitt, the former cavalry officer who has made a career out of exploiting his affair with Diana, Princess of Wales, is facing bankruptcy over a £2.7 million unpaid tax bill.
HM Revenue and Customs, the successor to the Inland Revenue, has submitted a petition for bankruptcy to the High Court involving sums payable as long ago as 1999/2000. The former tank commander owes some £2.2 million in unpaid tax, together with just under £500,000 in interest, surcharges and late-submission fines.
During a brief hearing yesterday, the court was told that Mr Hewitt's solicitors requested a six-week adjournment so that he might "bring his tax affairs up to date". He now has until Nov 18 to get his affairs in order or face a second hearing during which he could be made bankrupt.
Mr Hewitt, 47, was absent from the hearing and his representative refused to comment on the case. The Revenue was similarly reticent, saying: "We are unable to comment on an individual's tax affairs."
