My Cherie Amour, by the landlord of the Bull
My Cherie Amour, by the landlord of the Bull

When the Prime Minister's wife reminisced yesterday about her first childhood kiss, it struck a romantic chord with the recipient. Richard Alleyne reports

As kiss-and-tells go, it must be one of the most amicable on record. When Cherie Blair revealed at the Labour Party conference in Brighton the details of her first childhood kiss, the recipient could not resist reliving his own memories of the event.

Pub landlord Stephen Smerdon with his wife Claire at the Bull Inn
But far from dishing dirt on the Prime Minister's wife, Stephen Smerdon, who was brought up on the same Liverpool street, was even more gushing about the event than she was.

Mr Smerdon, a three-times married pub landlord, who would be happy to admit that his first love's success has slightly overshadowed his own, describes it as one of the major events of his life.
