Three trapped on Mount Logan, situation 'very grave'
Three trapped on Mount Logan, situation 'very grave'
Last Updated Fri, 27 May 2005 21:14:07 EDT

WHITEHORSE - Three members of one of Canada's most famous search and rescue teams are themselves in peril on Canada's tallest peak - Mount Logan, in the Yukon.

The three men are members of the North Shore Rescue, based in North Vancouver, B.C. All of them are experienced mountaineers, but an attempt to reach the summit has turned into a race to rescue the climbers.

Mount Logan, which stretches almost 6,000 metres, is notorious for its sudden snow squalls that blow in from the Pacific Ocean.

Late Friday afternoon, there was word that two rescuers had managed to climb up to the three in trouble, erect another tent and set up stoves. But there's no word on when or how the trapped trio will be brought down to safety.

Hope it turns out OK.

2. They are not dealing with huge 'air' issues. They should be able
to last a few days with the stoves. Those mountain men are a tough lot. The helicopter pilots are incredible. They'll land on anything. You don't fly for the rescue service in the mountains unless you want action. They'll find a way.

This isn't Everest. All they need are tents and hot-packs and food. They'll be fine.
