What is THIS?
Quebec's Witch Hunt Against Niqabi Minority

By Haroon Siddiqui
The Toronto Star
Sunday, Mar 28, 2010

Governments intervene against the religious wishes of Jehovah's Witness families to give blood transfusions to save the lives of their kin. The Quebec government wants to intervene to deny health care to women whose religious wish is to wear the niqab.

In Saudi Arabia, Iran and parts of Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, police or vigilante militias crack down on women not wearing the niqab or the burqa. In Quebec, authorities want to crack down on women who do.

Quebec officials have already chased down one niqab-wearing woman to oust her from a second French language class after she had been hounded out of her first. The bureaucrats are emulating the gendarmes of autocrats Kemal Ataturk of Turkey in the 1920s and the first Shah of Iran in the 1930s who persecuted women wearing either the niqab or the hijab.

1. Are you for it or against it?
I can't tell by your thread title.

I oppose the entire effort.

2. Well of course I'm against it.
I was expressing my surprise that Quebec would impose such measures. I have relatives living there who keep telling me it's THE place to live if you want real tolerance, will have to ask them why this woman is being discriminated against if that's so. Besides, the article wasn't really posted for my opinion on it, it was supposed to be an informative post this is happening. K?

3. I doubt this would survive a court challenge,
but we seem to be heading for another sikh-turban incident. A lot of fuss about nothing, instead of being concerned over important things. Quebec is heavily in debt, and that should be the real thing to worry about.

4. Certainly Quebec has to worry about it's economy, but
I remember the sikh-turban incident, and although it should have been a lot of fuss about nothing, was amazed at the comments I heard regarding it, they were horrible, vulgar and bigoted to the extreme. Human rights ARE important and disregarding the 'rare' incidents (not so rare, only a few are reported imo) only encourages worse. It wasn't a lot of fuss about nothing for the girl targeted. Not at all.
