Harper apologizes for unloading on Ignatieff
This hasn't been a good trip for Steve.

But Harper quickly withdrew the remark after learning he had been misinformed by one of his media aides, Dimitri Soudas.

“During my press conference, I attacked Mr. Ignatieff for some things he had allegedly said about Canada and the G8,” Harper said.

“I learned shortly after the press conference this was not a quotation of Mr. Ignatieff. I regret the error and I apologize to Mr. Ignatieff for this error.”

3. The Globe has a good response quoted from Bob Rae

Liberal foreign affairs critic Bob Rae said that the matter showed Harper's true character.

“I think all Canadians have to recognize that we have the smallest man on the world stage that it's possible to imagine, and that's Stephen Harper,” Mr. Rae told CTV News Channel.

“He never misses an opportunity to stoop. Not to conquer, just to throw mud.”

4. At least this one has the form of an actual apology
"I did/said X, X was incorrect/wrong, I apologize for X." That's how it should be done.

Of course, if I could actually trust him to mean it (or not assume that the damage to Ignatieff from the original statement would be worse than what this does to him), it'd be worth something.
