OTTAWA — The Conservatives on Wednesday attempted to smooth a rift within their ranks over former prime minister Brian Mulroney that emerged after a senior minister in the Stephen Harper government suggested Mulroney was no longer a member of the party.
The Conservatives emerged from a caucus meeting, the first attended by Harper since the feud began, to declare their respect and admiration for Mulroney.
"I have great respect for former prime minister Mulroney. I'm a big fan of free trade, and NAFTA was a tremendous accomplishment for our country and the people of Canada," Finance Minister Jim Flaherty told reporters.

He has to suck up to Mulroney and his minions because he cannot afford a split with his poll numbers dropping rapidly. This new-found love for Mulroney will not be well received by some of his base.
