Labour law in Canada (BC)
Hey folks,

I have a grievance filed with my CUPE local. They are happily giving me the brush off so I am now ready to take my grievance to CUPE BC & CUPE National and to the Labour Relations Board. I will be filing a section 12 grievance with the LRB. What I'm looking to find out is whether I should start looking into legal counsel at this point. If so, what kind of lawyer am I looking for.

I don't want to publicly go into what the grievance is about here. I think that would be inappropriate at this stage. The short form is that last summer I lost my job when my supervisor decided that he wanted a friend in the position.

Anyway, if anyone can point me in the right direction, I would appreciate the help.

Thanks in advance.

Dancing Kali

Before you take any steps to contact CUPE National or CUPE BC do yourself a huge favour,
and save yourself a lot of grief, by checking out this forum first:

www.uncharted.ca

Post there what you want to know regarding your grievance with CUPE and you'll get honest
answers from other union members in similar situations. They want to help.

Check out the forums there, as well as the archives. There's a wealth of information on
that website about how to deal with grievances.

There are members from all kinds of unions posting there.

3. Good on you for actually sticking up for yourself there

I know a lot of the provinces generally have decent protection for workers in a lot of areas, but I also know way too many of my friends are intimidated into accepting absolutely criminal working conditions because they think they're legal, or they fear retribution, etc.

I always like hearing someone knowing their rights and actually acting on it. It's not common enough. ;P

There's a reason why it's not common enough.

I relied on my union to look out for my rights. Worst mistake I ever made.

When your employer and your union gang up against you it can be overwhelming - like David v. Goliath.

Most people don't have the stomach for the fight ahead.

dancing kali asked for someone to point her in the right direction. She needed help.

When a worker asks for help we should help.

Aren't there any other union members on this forum?
