Three soldiers dead, five wounded in Afghanistan

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — An insurgent attack killed three Canadian soldiers and injured five others this morning, shortly before they were scheduled to finish their tour in Afghanistan.

Corporal Andrew Grenon, 23, Corporal Mike Seggie, 21, and Private Chad Horn, 21, served with the Second Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, based in Shilo, Manitoba, and their battle group is due to rotate back home in the coming days and weeks.

"It saddens me to think of their loved ones who were expecting them to return home at the end of the month," said Brigadier-General Denis Thompson.

Their deaths brings to 96 the number of Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan, in addition to Canadian diplomat Glyn Berry who died in a 2006 bombing.

2. If the combat remains at the same level...

...another 75 or so young men will die for no reason before we pack it up in 2011.

Of course by then the argument will be that we can't leave because to do so would mean that the 175 or so deaths up to then were a waste. So we should stay longer so more can die trying to "finish the job", whatever that is.
