Manitoba closes highway overpass

The Manitoba government has closed an overpass on the Trans-Canada Highway near the city of Portage la Prairie as a safety precaution.

Officials with the Department of Highways said the closure is coincidental and has nothing to do with last weekend's collapse of an overpass in Laval, Que., that killed five people.

"Recent inspections indicate the structure requires some repairs to ensure it remains safe for all traffic," a government release said Friday.

The four-lane bridge crosses a rail line and is part of a bypass that diverts traffic around the city. Drivers heading both ways on the highway have been diverted through the centre of the city of 20,000.
