CanWest: Kenney sorry for privacy flap ("Misled," but "didn't mean to")

OTTAWA - Prime Minister Stephen Harper's parliamentary secretary formally apologized to the House of Commons Monday, saying he misled Parliament when he said he had a memo proving that Liberal governments routinely violated the privacy of those who file access to information requests.

However, Jason Kenney, Conservative MP for Calgary Southeast, stressed he did not attempt to deliberately mislead the House.

''The interpretation of this memorandum has been a point of debate in the House,'' Kenney said, rising on a point of order shortly before question period. ''I had an opportunity to reflect on the memo over the weekend and to recognize that I may have inadvertently misrepresented one aspect of the memo. If that was the case, I would like to apologize, Mr. Speaker, to you and the House.''

''I would like to emphasize that if I did misinterpret the memo, it was done in no way deliberately.''
