'THREE-STRIKES' LAW IN WORKS
(Wow, this seems to be flying under the Canadian media's radar. This is the only mention, in "Canada Briefs" that I was able to find on Google News.)

OTTAWA -- The federal government is preparing three-strikes-you're-out legislation that would make it easier to label criminals as dangerous offenders after a third serious conviction.

The bill -- part of the Conservative anti-crime package -- will be tabled this fall, says Justice Minister Vic Toews.

1. You sound miffed, Tuvor!
Don't worry...lots of stories out just in time for the doorsteps and virtually every headline has the 'three strikes' meme...

Do'h!!!

Oh you Gob and Pail...ever the contrarian...

They had one of their minions on CBC radio here in Vancouver -- the roll out of talking points seem to be simply (no kidding) "it worked in California and so it will work here" -- he was debating someone from the Law Society who wasn't very good actually and seemed quite flummoxed by the stupidity of the Tory argument by simply saying that 'it was factually wrong about California'

Which to us political junkies means, that just because the argument is wrong and insanely stupid, doesn't mean people will reject it...especially rightwingers.

2. Good. Thanks for that, MrPrax.
If these New Conservatives ever put forward an idea that didn't smack of Harper's list of favourite US programs (Iraq's nuclear program is the single most important issue facing the world, 4-year terms, pull out of Kyoto, etc.), well, I don't know what I'd do. My disbelief would manifest itself in some unusual physical reaction, I'm sure.

3. Hahahahaha...yeah
Yes...I have been quite annoyed with myself not seeing the REAL priorities facing Canada too...little did we know that the solutions laid South all the time...US politics circa 1994!

He even stole Gingrich's tag 'commonsense' at one point...

Somebody buy this fucker a calender and a brain...
