Officials apparently tipped unlawfully about identity of document seekers
(Canwest) OTTAWA - Federal officials appear to be breaking Canadian law by violating the secrecy that is supposed to protect the identities of Canadians who request documents under the Access to Information Act.

Revealing the name of someone requesting documents under the Access to Information law is a violation of the Privacy Act.

However, the identity of some requesters appears to be being shared widely among several departments, reaching to the Prime Minister Stephen Harper's office and his director of communications.

Documents obtained by CanWest News Service under the Access to Information law reveal that in one case the name of a reporter about to receive documents was divulged during a conference call by an official reporting on behalf of the Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Department.
