Pope assails Canadian laws
VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict sparked a debate about the place of religious beliefs in Canadian politics Friday, telling Ontario bishops Canada has excluded “God from the public sphere” with laws supporting same-sex marriage and abortion.

The pontiff told a group of seven visiting bishops in Vatican City that Canadian Catholic politicians are ignoring the values of their religion, yielding to “ephemeral social trends and the spurious demands of opinion polls.”

“In the name of tolerance your country has had to endure the folly of the redefinition of spouse, and in the name of freedom of choice it is confronted with the daily destruction of unborn children,” the Pope said.

Alfonse Ainsworth, general secretary of the organization, said he expects the bishops will take the Pope's words into consideration when planning their strategy for the next provincial and federal election.

Not very smart. But like most politicians they don't know what goes on locally.

Mr. Pope I believe has just set things up for losing Catholic school funding.

Of course he is not aware of Canada and how it was formed but only of the recent upsurge in apparent influence after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Well he will loose out in Canada. Much the same way that they have lost out in South America.

1. He must first remove from his own eye the plank of pedophilia
before he may criticize the speck in ours.

I'll bet he wishes Jesus had never opened his big yap about hipocrisy.

4. If the pope is so worried about our politics and birth rate
He should move here, and have some kids.

7. The Catholic Church has ruled Canadian politics for too long
They had control of an entire province for more than 100 years, causing untold miseries. And they have a lot of gall preaching "morality" after the aboriginal residential schools and the pedophile scandals.

And WTF are bishops doing planning election strategies?

If they want to influence politics, let them run in political elections.

8. Practically ignored is the fact that the pope is not only a religious
leader, but also the Vatican's official head of state. Any government that takes its marching orders from a foreign potentate is committing treason.

10. Pope and his minions are part of the problem.

With their ridiculously out-dated, nonsensical "rules". Perpetuating hate, disease and poverty......I agree that the duke needs to seriously fuck off.

11. Well, God has no place in the public sphere in the first place,
so that's a good thing.
