Harper warns of political consequences if Liberals block Senate reform

OTTAWA (CP) - Prime Minister Stephen Harper is warning Liberal senators they'll face "political consequences" if they thwart his efforts to reform the upper house.

Harper issued the warning Thursday during an unprecedented appearance before a special Senate committee examining his Conservative government's proposal to limit senators' terms to eight years.

His admonition was taken as a threat by at least one Liberal senator. Jim Munson suggested Harper is setting the stage for an election showdown over the Liberal-dominated Senate's refusal to quickly rubber-stamp bills close to the prime minister's heart.

"There are critics who believe that you would like nothing better than to fight an election on the backs of the Senate," Munson told Harper.

"Well, don't give me the opportunity," Harper shot back.

2. I think an election is coming in the fall

Harper will want to catch the Liberals before the leadership contest is over. The softwood lumber deal stinks worse all the time. Things will only get worse in Afghanistan. He might as well go early, throw every accusation he can think of at the opposition, and hope something sticks.
