CanWest Global Communications appoints Derek Burney as chairman
WINNIPEG (CP) - CanWest Global Communications Corp. (TSX:CGS) said Wednesday it has appointed Derek Burney, former chairman and CEO of Bell Canada International, as chairman of the company.

Burney adopts the new position while he works as lead director of Shell Canada Ltd. (TSX:SHC) and serves on the board of TransCanada Pipelines Ltd. (TSX:TCA.PR.X)

He is also a senior strategic adviser to the Ogilivy Renault law firm.

Earlier in his career, he worked as president and CEO of CAE Inc. and in the chairman and CEO position at Bell.

Burney served as Canada's ambassador to the United States from 1989 to 1993 and as chief of staff to former prime minister Brian Mulroney from 1987 to 1989. In 1993, he was named an Officer of the Order of Canada.

1. Seeing as CanWest/Global is already a mouthpiece for the faux
cons, this appointment fits perfectly. The guy is a bud of Mulroney who is an adviser to harper. It means CanWest will continue to propagandize for the faux cons.

2. Familar Corporate Hack...
Expect more pro-Tory cheerleading from a Tory power broker that has little experience in broadcasting

Where do we remember him:

Harper says his transition team is working hard

"...It was his first public appearance since his victory speech Monday night, and Harper and his family were greeted by an excited crowd of supporters.

He told them his transition team has already begun its work under the guidance of former diplomat and chief of staff to Brian Mulroney, Derek Burney.

Good wrap up of Burney and some of what he has done with particular interest to his close MIC ties to the US through CAE.

3. I thought the name was familiar from Mulroney days
I guess that finishes Canwest as far as being Liberal supporters goes - no surprise there.
