Duceppe seeks answers on Canadian mission in Afghanistan

QUEBEC -- Bloc Québécois leader Gilles Duceppe said Monday his questions about Canada's mission in Afghanistan go unanswered by the Harper government, which considers them unpatriotic.

While Quebec soldiers won't take the lead role in the mission until next year, troops from Valcartier who have served for six months in Afghanistan have returned and a new contingent of 33 members of Royal 22e Regiment left on Monday to train the Afghan army.

While he said he supports Canadian troops, Duceppe questions whether the international effort is enough, noting that the resurgence of regional warlords in Afghanistan and the resumption of heroin production.

He said Prime Minister Stephen Harper has accepted the view of U.S. Presient George W. Bush that "it's the devil against God," an opinion Duceppe does not share.
