Interviews tainted, Khadr lawyers argue

Abdullah Khadr is fighting his extradition to the U.S. to face charges of terrorism, arguing any information he gave authorities, in Pakistan or in Canada, is tainted by his alleged torture.

Khadr's lawyers filed a motion in the Toronto case yesterday asking that the FBI, RCMP, Canada's spy service and other federal officials be compelled to testify about the 25-year-old's interrogation while he was held without charge in Pakistan.

"To allow this evidence into the proceedings would be unfair," Khadr's Edmonton-based lawyer Dennis Edney said in an interview yesterday.

The U.S. has requested Khadr's extradition to face charges of co-operating with Al Qaeda and plotting to kill U.S. troops in Afghanistan. If convicted, the eldest son of the late, reputed Canadian Al Qaeda financier Ahmed Said Khadr could be sentenced to life and fined $1 million (U.S.).
