Quebec's forestry industry backs softwood deal
MONTREAL — Support for the controversial deal to end the Canada-U.S. softwood lumber dispute continues to grow as Quebec's forest industry companies today ended their opposition to the agreement.

“There is a wide-ranging consensus on accepting ,” said Guy Chevrette, head of the Quebec Forest Industry Council, after a meeting at which members decided that most of their concerns have been addressed.

“We've made progress on most of the points we raised,” he said.

The breakthrough comes after Ontario and British Columbia said over the past few days that they now back the deal in the wake of Washington's agreeing to make minor concessions, including requiring the United States to provide six months' notice if it wants out of the agreement. Any termination would also be followed by a one-year standstill period before any further trade sanctions could be launched.
